    Notes:

    "Unhallowed Intrusion" by Don Shadburn
"John Langley, a son of John and Sally Langley, was born May 9, 1792 in North Carolina and died in 1869 in Lumpkin or Gilmer County. He was twice married to Cherokee mixed-bloods: Sarah Parris and Mrs. Susannah (Dougherty) McClure. Langley qualified for a 640-acre reservation of land on July 10, 1817, which was taken on the Chestatee River in Hall County. He had four family members at that time.
In 1839-40 a series of letters passed between Langley, Senator Wilson Lumpkin, and Thomas H. Crawford, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, with respect to money owed Langley for his reservation claim, which had been awarded $4,030 by the U.S. Commissioners at New Echota in 1837. George Kellogg, postmaster and storekeeper at Coal Mountain on the old Federal Road, wrote to the Indian commissioner on June 1, 1839, saying that Langley had given power of attorney to Johnson K. Rogers to collect the money due him for his reservation, or any portion of it. In February of 1840 Senator Lumpkin wrote several letters to the commissioner's office requesting information about Langley's claim, and asked "when, & where, can Mr. Langley received his money?" Later that year Langley gave Senator Lumpkin power of attorney to collect his money. Lumpkin wrote on December 11, 1840 to Commissioner Crawford: "If there is no other convenient way of paying Mr. Langley his just dues, I must consent to act as his attorney receive & remit the money to him -- as he is an honest citizen of my State, now residing in the County of Forsyth. Please to let me hear from you on this subject." (M234, Roll 117, frames 530-547.)
Langley was involved in several land transactions in the county for a number of years. One of the earliest deed records reveals that he sold Lot 844-14-1 on Sept. 13, 1839 to William Bennett for $200. On Janurary 8, 1840 Langley assigned a mortgage deed to Minor W. Brown for a promissory note for $492.68 payable "on or before" Dec. 25th, on lots 616, 617, 694, 695, 720, 721, and 771-14-1 (360 acres).
Sheriff Robert Williams sold lots 882 and 883 to Langley on May 3, 1842for $46, following a writ of fieri facias issued from Justices Court inthe suit of James Huckaby against Phillip Coleman and William A.Coleman. Langley then conveyed the lots (80 acres) to Isaac Phillips onAugust 29, 1843 for $250. Then, on December 10, 1845, Langley, acting as"guardian for Daniel, a man of Color of the county of Lumpkin," sold 30acres of Lot 268, 40 acres of Lot 269, and 20 acres (east half) of Lot270-3-1 (a total of 90 acres) for $400.
