Elder Edward Bates, the American immigrant, was born in England in 1605,and came from Bosto n or vicinity, in Lincolnshire, to America. He joinedthe first church in Boston, November, 16 33, and is called in the records"man-servant to our brother Thomas Leverett." He was among th efifty-seven inhabitants of Boston who were disarmed in 1638 because offollowing the religiou s teachings of Anne Hutchinson. He was admitted afreeman, March 13, 1638-39, and was a propri etor of Weymouth,Massachusetts, in 1643. He was a deputy to the general court in1639-40-41, a nd again in 1660. He was appointed commissioner to end smallcauses in Weymouth in 1639-43. H e was selectman in 1643, and was oftenemployed by the town in legal matters. For more than th irty years he heldthe office of elder of the church and he held many other offices oftrust. H e owned an interest in a corn mill and in a saw mill. His willwas dated October 22, 1683, an d proved July 22, 1686. He died March 25,1686. He married Susanna (???).
