Thomas Smith, eldest son of Robert and Phebe, became the owner of the homestead farm under the will of his father. An apple tree of natural fruit grew up wild near a fence in one of his fields. The tree proved to be a prolific bearer, and developing apples of superior quality for eating and cider, became well known in the neighborhood, and was kept closely trimmed of scions for grafting. The same apple, which has been brought down by successive grafting, is the well known Smith cider apple of today." (from "The Genealogy of Robert Smith" by Josiah B. Smith, 1885).

  1. 8.  SMITH, Robert was born 29 Apr 1693, Chaigley, Lancashire, England (son of SMITH, John and KELLET, Ellen); died 26 Jun 1745, Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Robert Smith was a carpenter by trade, and removed, with his wife Phebe, soon after their marriage, to a farm in Buckingham, on the southeastern line, adjoining the Windy Bush farm of William Smith, where he lived during the remainder of his life. He was the progenitor of the Buckingham family of Smith, which has become very large, embracing many of the most familiar names in Bucks County at the present time and spread over a wide extent of the country. He was not of any known kindred to William Smith, progenitor of the Smiths of Wrightstown. The descendants of inter-marriages between the two families are so numerous, as well as so many marriages of cousins in the first, second, third, and fourth degree, it will be found very convenient for them to have the genealogy of the two progenitors.
In 1738 Robert Smith built a stone addition to his log house, which is yet standing, a good substantial structure, and has been occupied as a dwelling house by six generations of the family. Robert Smith died 6 mo. 26, 1745, leaving a widow and eight children. His death was not only a serious loss to his family, but was also felt very sensibly by Buckingham meeting of Friends, of which he was a highly esteemed member. The first monthly meeting held at that place was 10 mo. 6, 1720, and he was soon after appointed one of the overseers. It was said he was a good man, better known in his own meeting than in the civil affairs of the province. His widow, Phebe Smith, a recommended minister, married Hugh Ely [Sr.], 5,6,1753. Her second husband, Hugh Ely, died 1772. She remained about one year at his late residence, and subsequently lived with her sons Thomas and Joseph. Her death occurred at the old homestead, at the residence of her son Thomas, 1 mo., 1774". (from "The Genealogy of Robert Smith" by Josiah B. Smith, 1885)

  3. 10.  KINSEY, Edmund was born 1683, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (son of KINSEY, David and Magdelena); died 24 Dec 1759, Buckingham, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Edmund Kinsey, b. 1683, second son of David and Magdalen Kinsey, married Sarah Ogburn on August 21, 1708. The records of Newark Monthly Meeting held at Center, May 3, 1708, show that Howell James (Edmund's stepfather) appeared and produced a letter from his wife's son, Edmund Kinsey, requesting certificate of this meeting of his clearness in relation to marriage, and at the following meeting a certificate was signed for Edmund Kinsey to Woodbridge Meeting in order for his marriage with Sarah Ogburn. The marriage took place at the house of Nathaniel Fitz-Randolph, stepfather of the bride. In 1715 the Woodbridge Monthly Meeting granted a certificate of removal to Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks County, PA, to Edmund Kinsey, his wife, Sarah Ogburn Kinsey, and Jane Fitz-Randolph, his mother-in-law. Edmund settled in Buckingham Township, purchasing five hundred acres surrounding Buckingham Meeting House, which had been erected only a few years prior to his removal. He was a very earnest Quaker, and in the Falls Monthly Meeting of December, 1717, he received a minute of approval to the Meeting of Ministers and Elders. He was one of the early prominent ministers of Buckingham Meeting, and traveled considerably "in the service of the truth." He also established the first scythe and axe factory in Buckingham, in which a tilt hammer, run by water power was used. He died at the residence in Buckingham on December 21, 1759, having served forty years in the ministry. His wife, Sarah Ogburn Kinsey, survived him and died in her ninety-seventh year.
Jane and Samuel Ogburn, parents of Sarah Ogburn, Edmund Kinsey's wife, came from Scotland and settled in New Jersey. After the death of Samuel, Jane Ogburn married secondly, John Hampton, and thirdly, Nathaniel Fitz-Randolph, and after her remoal to Bucks County with her daughter and son-in-law, she married fourth, Hugh Sharp. Her sons by John Hampton followed her to Bucks County, and their descendants are prominently identified with that county for several generations.
In a deed recorded at Trenton, in the West Jersey records, Liber B., part 2, page 705, there is a reference to "Lots lately in the tenure of Samuel Ogburn, first husband of Jane Hampton."
    -
    EDMUND KINSEY,
Son of David Kinsey, the immigrant, and his wife, Magdalen Kinsey, was born in 1683 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died 12-24-1759 in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He married 8-21-1708 at Woodbridge, New Jersey, Sarah Ogborn (No. 121), daughter of Samuel Ogborn and Jane (Curtis) Ogborn. She was born about 1691 and died aged 96 years (1787?).

Edmund Kinsey was the younger son of David Kinsey. After his father's death, his mother, Magdalen Kinsey, married Howell James and they lived at New Castle, now Delaware. In 1708, Howell James asked Newark, now Kennett Meeting, for a certificate for Edmund Kinsey's clearness to marriage. The marriage records state: "Ye Monthly Meeting at New Ark in ye County of New Castle, territory of Pennsylvania, having reported that the young man was clear from all women in their parts upon ye account of marriage and whilst among them did behave himself soberly." Date 5-3-1708. This was to Woodbridge Meeting in New Jersey. At the succeeding meeting, the certificate was granted and seemed to be accepted for removal as well as marriage.

Edmund Kinsey and his wife remained at Woodbridge until 1715, when they were granted a certificate of removal to Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. This certificate included Edmund Kinsey, his wife and Jane Fitz Randolph, his mother-in-law. He settled in Buckingham, purchasing 500 acres surrounding Buckingham Meeting House, which had been erected only a few years before. He was an early and prominent minister of that meeting and "travelled considerably in the service of truth."

He died at the age of 76, having served forty years in the ministry. A memorial of Edmund Kinsey is published in the Friend, Vol. 33, page 12.

Edmund and Sarah (Ogborn) Kinsey had nine children, six sons and three daughters:

  8. 15.  LENOIR, Ann was born 1701, Buckingham, England; died 12 Feb 1771, Solebury Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

At Buckingham Meeting House, 11-2-1761 William Michener married Ann (Lenoir) Schofield, widow of John Schofield. She must have been a very interesting person. She was a French woman who had been driven to this country by religious persecutions. At Falls Meeting, Pa. in 1724 she had married John Schofield who came from England 12-28-1717. She was a Minister about 1732 at Buckingham Meeting.

8-26-1761 Mary Atkinson and Ann Schofield appointed to attend Yearly Meeting.

1762 Ann Michener served in the same capacity.

1775 Ann Michener, widow of William, formerly widow of John Schofield is still very frequently sent as representative by Buckingham to Yearly Meeting.

5-28-1777 All representatives present at Yearly Meeting except Ann Michener.

Her daughter, Jane Schofield, married Samuel Smith of Windy Bush in 1750 and for many years after William's death, Ann lived with them. She was called "Granny Michener" and was described by John Trego, who was born in 1780, as "a little toddling old woman." She moved to the home of her son, Samuel Schofield in Buckingham in 1789.

The Josiah B. Smith Papers in the Bucks Co. Historical Library have this to say in 1789 in 6 mo.
    -
"Mother Ann Michener removed to her son Samuel Schofield. Our ancient friend Ann Michener, a minister of Buckingham, died 2-12-1791 in her 89th year. She was the widow of William Michener. Her first husband was John Schofield."
Wills Book 5 (1222) pg. 253, Ann Michener of Solebury, widow, dated 5-18-1790, proved 3-16-1791. Executors: sons Samuel and Jonathan Schofield. She mentions her daughter, Ann Schofield.

    William Michener died 6-10-1780.

For many years John Dyer kept a Diary. This man was a neighbor of William Michener and his daughter married into the Michener family, so many facts are established in this Diary which relate to the Michener Family. This quote is from the Diary:

"1780-6-10, William Michener departed this life about 3 o'clock this morning."
Wills Book 4-885, pg. 214, Will of William Michener.
