Susanna's parentage is presently unknown. The attribution to her of the surname Smith is incorrect and is probably due to an entry in old records which note that one of the houses built in Scituate was "The Smiths Goodman Hait's brother." However, "the Smiths" most likely refered to the town blacksmith, and not to a family of that name. Colonial records almost always refer to a piece of property belonging to the head of household, rather than the family at large.

Susanna married secondly Robert Bates of Stamford. She died in early 1674. Her heirs entered into an agreement to divide her estate on 1 February 1673/4:

" Witness these presents an agreement made and concluded between us viz: Moses Hoyt, Joshua Hoyt, Banjamin Hoyt, Thomas Lyon (for his wife), Samuel ffinch (for his wife), Samuel ffirman (for his wife) concerning ye distribution of ye Estate of our deceased mother Susan Bates, ye contents followeth: That Moses Hoyt receive of Joshua Hoyt ye Just sum of four pounds, thirteen shillings & sixpence which ye said Joshua doth agree to pay. & Samuel Hoyt to have ye beding in his hands & ye horse & wels in his hands. Benjamin Hoyt to have ye ten pounds left in his hands by our mother, Susana aforesaid. Thomas Lyon & Samuel ffinch to have ye horses and mares young and old running in ye woods of norwake equally between us, and twenty shillings to each of us paid by our brother Joshua Hoyt which ye said Joshua agrees unto. Samuel ffirman to have ye horses & mares running in fairfield limits & twenty shillings more paid by our brotherJoshua Hoyt unto me.
The Residue of ye Estate of our aforesaid mother remaining in ye hands of our brother Joshua Hoyt being four pounds thirteen shillings sixpence, which ye said Joshua to have as his pte in ye distribution of ye aforesaid Estate mutually agreed uto. The distribution as above of ye Estate of or mother Amohnst us to our mutual satisfaction in consideration whereof we the above named doe herby Joyntly and severally release discharge & acquit our brother Joshua Hoyt, and one another from all & any further demands of any right, title or interest in ye Estate aforesaid & from all & any trouble or molestation in and about ye same.
Joyntly desiring yt this our agreement comited to publique record for ye further establishment of ye same, further more it is agreed by us forenamed yt if yr shall arise any Just debts due fro our mother in her widdow-hood yt wee or any of us kow not of, yt wee ye forenamed will contribute equally to ye payment of ye said debt.
In witness of truth unto ye premises wee ye ptyes forenamed doe binde our selves firmly as witness our hands this 1th 12 mo: Anno 1674."

Her inventory has so far proved elusive.
