    • John Ellis Tallman was named after his mother's brother General John Ellis Wool who fought in the war of 1812 and the Mexican / American war. In 1815 John's family moved from Troy, New York to the town of Oswegatchie, New York. In 1820 at the age of 16. John left home and began working as a farm hand. In 1823 he purchased 80 acres. After paying off a $600.00 debt and his farm, his hard work allowed him to purchase an additional 400 acres. Besides farming he pursued other enterprises and at one time owned the Ogdensburg paper mills which later burned to the ground at a cost of $40,000.00. John was recognized as a determined and resourceful Individual, and one of the more influential men in Oswegatchie, New York. John E. Tallman appears in the 1850 census as living in Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y.
