Notes - John Smith, b. 1656, was of Hayworth. He was the eldest son of Joseph and Ann Smith, of Stanbury, in the parish of Haworth, Yorkshire, England. They were members of the Religious Society of Friends. Joseph Smith was prosecuted by the magistrates for the West Riding, Yorkshire, in 1665, for joining the Quakers. At the time of his marriage to Ellen Kellet on February 22, 1686, John Smith's residence was at Chaigley in the parish of Mittion, Lancashire, England, and his occupation was that of a glazier. About 1699 he and his family came to America on the ill-fated ship "Britania", Richard Nicholas, commander, from Liverpool, England. John Smith died on the passage and was buried at sea, leaving a will dated "ye Twenty ninth day of July Anno Dom 1699" [See Appendix] which was proved at Philadelphia, the 9th of September, 1699. His widow, Ellen Smith, survived him and married again in 1702, John Merrick, at Abington Meeting house, in Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County, Pa. She was living after 1710."
