    • Documentation:
      1. From "Petitions For Land From the South Carolina Council Journals,
Vol. I: 1734/5 -1748," pg. 114, from the meeting of Friday 3 March
1737/38.......... "Read the Petition of Tho's Polk paying a Warrant for two hundred and fifty acres and a lott in Queensborough of the Welch Tract. Order'd that a warrant do issue for the Township of Queensborough.

      2. The survey of the above 250 acres was not done until 28 March
1749, and a grant of land was dated 5 Sep 1750 for "all that parcel or
Tract of Land containing Two hundred and fifty Acres, on the North East
Side of Pedee River near half is [?] mark in Queensborough Township in
Craven County, bounded on all Sides by Vacant Land." I have copy of survey and grant.

      3. From "Petitions For Land From the South Carolina Council Journals,
      Vol. II: 1748 - 1752," pg. 10, meeting of Tuesday, 24 January 1748/49,
pg. 40........... "The Petition of Thomas Polk setting forth that the Petitioner was desirous of settling himself on Peedee River that he had five children and one slave for whom he never had any land prays for Three Hundred acres of Land on Peedee River and that he might have a grant for the same. The prayer therof was granted." I have a copy of the council minutes. I do not have copy of a survey or of grant.

      4. Survey of the above land was done for Thomas Polk (this is assumed to be the same land as No. 3 above since that land was on Peedee River, also) on 24 March 1748. At the bottom of this survey is a notation stating "Ord. bo. 7th July 1767 for Danl Polk." I have copy of this survey.

      5. From "Petitions For Land From the South Carolina Council Journals,
      Vol. V.: 1757 - 1765," pg. 17, meeting of Tuesday, 6 December 1757,
"For Certifying of Platts" Thomas Polk, 300 acres in the Welch Tract. This appears to me to be the certification of the same land Thomas Polk applied for in No. 3 above and same land surveyed in No. 4 above. If this is so, and Thomas Polk's land plat was certified, then he should have received a grant not long after the certification. But it appears he did not receive such a grant per No. 6 below. Some of the various writings I have seen state that this grant was never made, which would indicate that this 300 acres (Nos. 3, 4, 5), were, in fact, the same as the 300 acres per Nos. 6, 7, 8 below). In other words, Daniel, in No. 6 below, is asking for prolongation of the warrant originally issued to Thomas, such warrant conditions never fulfilled by Thomas Polk, for whatever reason.

      6. From "Petitions For Land From the South Carolina Council Journals,
      Vol. VI: 1766 - 1770," pg. 95, meeting of Tuesday, 7 July 1767 ......
"The following Petitions for prolonging Warrants and Certifying Platts
were presented and read viz:......... "Daniel Polk 300 Welch Tract Thomas Polk." I think this means that Daniel Polk is asking for prolongation of the warrant originally issued to Thomas Polk. The entry in the book does not specify what is happening, but based on No. 7 below, where Daniel received the grant on 23 Feb 1768, this prolongation appears to be what happened. The obvious question I have based on Nos. 4, 5, 6, ...... Is Thomas Polk dead? Did he die between 7 Dec 1757, the date his survey was certified, and 7 July 1767, the date Daniel requested prologation? If Thomas is not dead, then why is Daniel trying to get the 300 acres Thomas originally requested? I suppose Thomas could have given up the land, but if he did, according to what I have read, he had to present himself to the authorities in Charleston and be formally relieved of the responsibility for the land and any quit rents due. I have not seen a record where Thomas did appear and take any such relief action, leading me to speculate that Thomas Polk is dead, and that his son Daniel is taking up the warrant and is planning on doing what is necessary to receive the grant of the land. Daniel was apparently successful in receiving the grant of land per Nos. 7 and 8 below.

      7. Grant to Daniel Polk, dated 23 Feb 1768, "three hundred acres in the
Welch Tract on a small Creek called High Hill Creek on South West side
Peedee River in Craven County bounded on all sides by vacant Land." I
      have copy of grant.

      8. From "Citizens and Immigrants, South Carolina, 1768," under
Memorials and Quit Rents, pg. 171, ............ "Pg. 493 DANIEL POLK,
300 acres in Craven County on a small branch called High Hill Creek, SW
side of Pee Dee River, Survey certified 7-7-1767, granted 2-23-1768.

Pp. 81-82, "Polk Family and Kinsmen," shows the following: "William [son of John Polk Sr., son of Robert Polk of Somerset Co., MD.] died about Nov. 25, 1726/7 leaving a son John, and two daughters, Jane and Anne. These children were presumbly named for their grand parents, John Polk and his wife Jane, and Anne Polk, who married Francis Roberts. His wife did not long remain single, for on May 20, 1727, the inventory of his estate was filed by her and her second husband, Robert Clarkson. The singular feature about this inventory is that it was signed by James Cannon, John Pollet, Robert Polk and Thos. Polk as 'creditors and the next of kin.' Robert and Thomas Polk were probably his first cousins, sons of Robt. Polk and Grace Guillette. John Pollet was also probably his first cousin, a son of his aunt Martha. How James Cannon came to be next of kin, I do not know; but I am inclined to think that both he and John Pollet married two of the daughters of Robert Polk and Grace Guilette; that Wm. Polk, the blacksmith, had purchased from his uncle Robert Low Ridge and Polks Folly and had not completed the payment for same; therefore, his uncle robert's sons and sons-in-law appear as creditors and next of kin."

"Polks Here and Yon," by Emily George Polk Royalty, shows the children of Thomas I and Leviney Johns as follows:
      (1) Sarah b. c1733
      (2)Thomas b. c1739
      (3)Magadaline b. c1736
      (4)George age 6
      (5) Daniel age 4
      (6) Grace age 1
BILL POLK NOTE: I do not know what the age of 6, 4, 1, shown on the last three children means; appears it may mean age as of a certain date, but no date is given.

The following information (to next ----- ) was taken from "Polk Family & Kinsmen Sabine Parish, Louisiana," and "Kaufman County History," see master sources for full citations:

Thomas Polk arrived in South Carolina fifteen years or so before the Polks of North Carolina arrived in Anson County, later to become Mecklenburg County.

In about 1732-33 [actually 1734, see below deed], Thomas and his wife, Lurviah, sold the land [actually only 100 acres sold in 1734, see below deed] that Thomas had inherited from his father Robert Polk Jr. in Maryland. In this same era, the South Carolina Colonial Government invited the Welch Baptists of Pennsylvania to come to South Carolina as settlers. The Welch had come to America about 1725, settled among the Quakers with good relations, but being offered a place of their own, they accepted. The so-called Welch Tract (some 800,000 acres) was measured and laid out and the Baptists began moving to South Carolina. For a number of years, the only grants issued were to Baptists and then others were allowed to move into the area.

In 1737, according to the Council Journal of South Carolina, Thomas Polk was
granted 250 acres on the N. E. side of the Pee Dee River on Cat Fish Creek,
Queensborough Township, and 300 acres on the S. E. side of the Pee Dee River on High Hill Creek; the latter grant was not actually signed until 1748. At that
latter date, Thomas stated he had five children and one slave; apparently a widower, he may have married again. With him in this area were Thomas Jr. and Daniel Polk (proven sons), along with Robert (without a doubt a son), as well as Luke, John and George Polk. Luke and John probably are sons; George is more of a question. They all received land grants.

In 1759, Thomas Sr., Thomas Jr. and Daniel fought in the Fort Prince George
Expedition under the command of General George Gabriel Powell, and Daniel, Luke and Robert fought in the American Revolution under the command of General Francis Marion.

In 1767, the plantation on High Hill Creek granted to Thomas Sr. was given to
      Daniel, his eldest son.

"Polks Here and Yon," by Emily George Ruth Royalty, pp. 1-3, has several transcribed land transactions that mention Thomas Polk, John Polk, Luke Polk, and Daniel Polk.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------
"Polks Here and Yon," by Emily George Polk Royalty, shows an old deed of 12 Aug 1734, where Thomas Polk (Polck) of Dorchester Co., MD., and Vier his wife sell to Charles Hopkins, 100 acres, being part of 300 acres called "Venture" on the north side of the northeast fork of Nanticoke. This is excellent proof that Thomas Polk Sr. was the son of Robert Polk of Maryland, since in his will (see the will in notes under Robert Polk, Jr.), Robert left to his son Thomas this same land called "Venture." Below is information about that deed (copy is my IRN P-630):

The source of the following deed is:

      Volume 46, pg. 24 Assembly Proceedings, May 10--June 11, 1748.

Read the Petition of Thomas Jones of Dorchester County Praying Leave to bring in a Bill to Record a Deed for Part of a Tract of Land called Adventure containing 200 acres made to him by a Certain Thomas Polke of the said County Rejected the Petitioner not having complyed with the Resolve of this house Adjourned till to Morrow Morning ten of the Clock.

Concerning the above record...... I believe the land called "Adventure" is the same land as "Venture" owned by Thomas Polk, son of Robert Polk, Jr., and the 200 acres is the remainder of the land called "Venture" after Thomas sold 100 acres of it to Charles Hopkins (see deed of 1734 above). The record above seems to indicate that Thomas Polk was still in Dorchester Co., MD., around 1748. However, he may have sold the land through his agent or attorney, as the same [I believe he is the same] Thomas was in SC in 1737. This 1748 petition does, however, create some doubt in my mind as to whether the Thomas of SC is the same Thomas as son of Robert Polk, Jr. WHAT PROOF DO WE ACTUALLY HAVE that shows Thomas Polk of SC to be the same as the Thomas Polk of Dorchester Co., MD.?
