- John was born about the same time the War of Independence broke out. From census records we believe he was born in Virginia and moved to Kentucky about the time he and Martha were married.
Sometime between 1821 and 1830 John moved his family to Indiana.

John and his wife Martha appear on the 1850 census living in Madison Township, Putnam Co., Indiana.

Martha Williams, 68, female, b. VA, can't read or write.
Sarah Williams, 30, female, b. KY, can't read or write.
America Williams, 18, female, b. IN.
(Son John and his young family were next door).

The 1860 census Warren Township, Putnam Co., Indiana, indicates John had passed away, and Martha, age 80, was living in the home of her daughter America, who had married Jonathan Sears, some 8 years earlier.
Also America's sister Sarah (Celia) Williams age 40 was there.
