Joseph Erb went to Stephenson, Carrol Co., Illinois in 1854. He was a farmer and a minister. He was ordained in the Evangelical United Brethern in Christ church in 1872 and served the Brookville Circuit, Illinois. He met his death while enroute to market back east with a carload of horses. He was sleeping in the caboose when the train stopped, obstructing the rails in South Fork, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. A second train section crashed into the caboose and demolished it, killing two men including Joseph Erb. His son, Henry Erb went to Pennsylvania to bring the body back home to Illinois.
A memorial service was held at their home Feb. 20 1885.'
