    • An unusual event at the time of Willard and Jessie's deaths prompted the following front page story in the Nevada State Journal (Feb. 22, 1933) :

      DEATH STRIKES

      Man, Wife Die Within 12-Hour Period

      SUSANVILLE, Cal., Feb. 21 -
      Within a space of 12 hours Willard P. Carrick, 60, and his wife Mrs. Jessie Carrick, 43, died without hearing that the other was ill.
      Mrs. Carrick died Sunday night after an attack of influenza, and her husband, ill of the same disease, passed away in Susanville hospital early yesterday morning. He had not been told of his wife's death.
      Carrick came to Lassen county 25 years ago from Yolo county, where he was born, and Mrs. Carrick was a native of Lassen county.
      Five children survive the couple.

      NOTE:
      Willard was born in Nevada, not Yolo Co. CA as stated above.

      On March 3, 1933 the Nevada State Journal reported that one William Carrick was killed at a restaurant in Santa Rosa durring a holdup. He was a policeman.
      The paper stated he was a brother of Willard.

      The 1920 census shows Willard and family living in Leavit District, Lassen Co., California, south east of Susanville.
      Willard, age 53, stated he was a farmer, and with the family was Willard's father-in-law David Gerking, now widowed.

      Bureau of Land Management shows Willard purchasing 160 acres of land near Susanville, Lassen Co., CA on March 18, 1921.
