If you think this is confusing, visit the Portsmouth, RI, cemetery some time, awash in Benjamin Tallmans. Anyway here goes: my brother, also Benjamin Tallman to make things more confusing, and I are descended thus, Peter and Joan Briggs Tallman, Benjamin and Patience Durfee Tallman, Benjamin and Elizabeth Gorton Tallman, Thomas and Abigail Nichols Tallman, Thales and Priscilla Devol Tallman, Benjamin D. and Sarah Ann Dennis Tallman, John Wesley and Almina Tallman Tallman(both Tallmans), Albertus Edwards and Geneva Ansell Tallman, Benjamin Ansell and Hannah McNally Tallman, and then my brother and myself. My brother is having the DNA test now. Then we will know for sure.

The other Tallmans are Peter and Joan Briggs Tallman, Jonathan and Sarah Bicketson Tallman, Jonathan and Lydia Joy, John and Betsey(surname unknown) Tallman, Abner and Sally Cook Tallman, William Henry and Fanny G. Durfee Tallman, Levi W. and Amey C.(surname unknown) Tallman, Almina Tallman who married John Wesley Tallman.

So the Benjamin Tallman I wrote about is my great great grandfather. He lived on the original Peter Tallman homestead as did my great grandfather. Charles Durfee has the complete family in ancestry.com All of these Tallmans pretty much were born and died in the Portsmouth area. One or two lived in Dartmouth, which is next door to Tivertown, one town over from Portsmouth in Massachusetts.

Benjamin Tallman, married to Elizabeth Gorton was the eldest son and it may be that since he got the land and buildings, the other Tallman males moved away. I can't prove it, but Benjamin 1 left a will which states he left his son William 20 shillings. Probably at his death William had already left for the west or what was the west then.

I have visited the area of the original Peter Tallman land as well as Common Fence Point sold to Thomas Durfee, peter Tallman's indentured servant as well as the Anthony Farm, all originally owned By Peter, after the Indians of course. The land is located at the northernmost point of the Island of Rhode Island at the edge of the Sakonnet River, which is where Benjamin D. Tallman had his fish traps.

Geneva, this article was interesting. I am descended from Benjamin Tallman and Lydia Harrison. I think that Benjamin Tallman and Patience Durfee were his great-grandparents? Since I seem to have at least 3 Benjamin Tallman's in my line, it is a little confusing. I was wondering which Benjamin this article was based on?
      I have:
      Peter Tallman-Joan Briggs
      Benjamin Tallman-Patience Durfee
      William Tallman-Anne Lincoln
      Benjamin Tallman-Dinah Boone
      Benjamin Tallman-Lydia Harrison
      Phoebe Tallman-Endimmion Baker Hammer
I haven't documented all this line yet, but pretty sure this is the line of decent.

Subject: some info on Benjamin D. Tallman 1807-83

This is a short excerpt from a report entitled, The Condition of South Coast New England Fisheries, 1871-1872. The report lays out the controversy
between hook and line fishing and trap fishing.

"In juxtaposition, the committee propose to place the evidence of Benjamin Tallman, of Portsmouth, well known as a fisherman of very great
experience, and who may be considered as the inventor of trap fishing. His examination by the committee was thorough and protracted. His oral reply to the 5th printed interrogatory was as follows: The proportion of tautog to scup is very small. I don't suppose that the average of each trap would amount to 400 pounds the whole season. In 1867, in nine days, I got $18,000; I have 6 traps; had three traps on one line; employed 27 men on these three traps and twenty seven on the other three; couldn't tell how many barrels; sold them at about $2.00 per barrel; should think about 10,000 barrels."

He goes on to explain in good years he gets about $30,000, in bad years due to weather less than $6,000. There is also a description in this report
of where the traps were set, and of how much material was used to make them. For example it took 450 pounds of twine to make one trap. It is a pretty good picture of fishing during this period in and around Narragansett Bay. "
