John Michael Opitz, or Opits, is said to have deserted the German army by swimming the Rhine, in company with one of his comrades. He then came to America and secured employment in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., New York, in 1775, at which time he was about 20 years of age.
Married Nancy Boshart, who bore him four sons and six daughters.
