The following infromation was compiled from numerous sources, and much of the credit goes to Joan R. Fitch
Henry appears on the 1880 Tehama Co. California census living with his parents. He is shown in this census as age one.
-
Henry appears on the 1900 Corning, Tehema Co., California census age 22 with his new wife Gertrude age 24. He and Gertrude were living in Henry's parent's home and were raising a baby girl 2 months old (un-named) and two children of Gertrude's from a previous marriage to a man named Ackley, they were Agnes Ackley age 6 and Charles Ackley age 4.
-
By May 1904 Henry and Gertrude are no longer married (if they were actually married at all) and it is known from later data that they had at least 3 children togther.
-
Henry registered for the WWI draft on September 11, 1918.
He stated he was a resident of Willows, Glenn Co., California, he was 44 years old and was born on October 23, 1873.
He indicated he was a farm laborer in the employment of Mr. George Lyons, of Lakeport, Lake Co., California. His wife was shown as Cora Belle Stevens also of Willows.
His physical description was medium height and build, grey eyes, slightly balding with dark brown hair.
-
Henry was noted in the Obituary of his mother on January 24, 1928, as living in Willows, Glenn Co., California.
-
The 1930 census finds Henry M. Stevens, age 55, living in Township 4, Glenn Co., California (ED. 11, Sheet 2B). He was married to Cora B. Stevens, age 56. Henry went on to state that he was a laborer on a sheep ranch, was born in California, and his parents had been born in New Jersey (his mother was actually born in Scotland and moved to New Jersey at a very young age). It appears the couple was living in tents and shacks set up for the sheep shearing crew, as noted on the census, which was probably not unusual at the height of the depression. The middle initial of M. may indicate he was a Jr. named after his father Henry Mains Stevens.
