Notes |
- Elisabeth stated in pension papers her maiden name was Polk or Pollock and that she was a "near blood relation to the late president James K. Polk, Ex-President of the United States". (Note: The grandfather of James K. Polk wrote his name Pollock). She continues to state she was married to Joseph VanSant in Carlisle, Schoharie Co., NY, in February, 1817, by Esquire Sweetman.
In another affadavit she names some of the wittnesses at their wedding as:
William Polk;
Rosy VanSant;
Sylvanus Parkenson and his wife Hannah;
(Silvanus, was born at Basking Ridge, N. J., April 19, 1763, soon after his parents had arrived from New Hampshire. He is of record as having served short terms in the War of the Revolution every year from 1776 (when in his fourteenth year) to 1782 inclusive, the full account of which services is extant. He removed in 1789 to Carlisle, N. Y.; in 1827 he left there for Otto, in Cattaraugus county, N. Y., where he was residing on October 5, 1832. He resided with John Ferris, cited below, on the 1840 census, pointing to a possible relationship. Also note worthy is the fact that Agnes McDowell, his first wife was from Basking Ridge, Somerset Co., New Jersey. Sylvanus seems to have married a Sarah Ferris, and fathered at least 2 children with her).
John Ferris;
Nancy Rogers;
Jesse Roberts
In the same affadavit Elizabeth stated she and Joseph "had and raised ten children"
-
The spelling of Pollock was listed in the Town Clerk's Office for DeKalb when her children returned from the Civil War. She resided with her son Richard Van Sant 1880 census in Russell, NY. "Besty E. listed as 84 years old".
-
Elizabeth's son Richard was supplied a coffin for his mother by Mr. Daniel Colton on August 28, 1880, pointing to a death date prior to the 28th in Russell St. Lawrence Co., NY. (per Joseph's 1812 pension record). Indeed the pension files do record her death date as August 27, 1880.
