  The first time we see James is on the 1920 census. He appears with his parents living in Central Marshfield Township, Coos Co., Oregon. His father Lloyd W. Jacobs stated he was working in commercial sales of merchandise. James' mother Henrietta stated she was a sales lady of merchandise. - By 1930 James appears in Oakland, Alameda Co., California in the household of Frank John O'Brien as his step-son, age 19. His step-father was an editor of a trade journal. His mother stated she was born in Oregon and her father was born in Pennsylvania while her mother was born in Germany. James was delivering groceries at the time and indicated his natural father was born in South Dakota.
