  History of Roanoke County, Salem, Roanoke City, Virginia, and representative citizens, 1734-1900 (pp. 476-477). This biography was written about Alfred's son Alfred Jr., however it contains the following entry regarding Alfred Sr. ..."Dr. Alfred L. Wolfe, father of the subject of this sketch, was born at Culpeper Court House in 1809, and died in 1858. He was a Physician by profession, and practiced at Rockingham throughout his entire career. He had a splendid education, and enjoyed an exceedingly large practice. He took an active part in the affairs of his county, and was held in the highest esteem wherever known. Fraternally Dr. Wolfe was an Odd Fellow. He was joined in the bonds of matrimony with Sarah E. Ammon, who was born in Rockinham County in 1819. They had two children Alfred L., Jr., the subject of this sketch; and Sarah C., who married Richard E. Hopkins, a merchant residing in McGaheysville, Rockingham County. Mrs. Wolfe is now living at the home of her son, in the full enjoyment of all he faculties, and possesses the activity of a woman many years her junior"... - The 1840 census find Alfred and his family living in Rockingham co., Virginia, as follows: Dr. Alfred L.
