By 1860 Harry 54 a farmer is shown in Otsego, Aleegan Co., Michigan. He was with his wife Sarah 48 and the following children; Melissa 20, Harriet 15, William H. 13. Most of the family was from Vermont and the last 2 children were born in New York.

On November 28, 1861, in Otsego, Michigan, Harry enlisted as a private in the Union Army at the age of 57. He was in Company I of the 13th Michigan Infantry. He was Wounded on 29 March 1862 and received a disability discharge on August 7, 1862 in Stevenson, Alabama.

Harry and his family appear on the 1870 census. He was shown as a farmer, age 66 land valued at $4,000 and other property at $679. Harry and wife Sarah stated they were both born in Vermont. Their son William (H?) age 23 is shown at home with them and was working on the farm. Also a presumed daughter is listed by the name of Lizzie A. (?) and she had a child.
