- Henry ran a cigar shop in the city of Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York. According to his grandson Henry Reid Paige, the cigars in the shop were made by hand.

The 1860 census finds Henry living as a single man in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York, as follows:
H. A. Reed, 25, male, Tobacco Store, $100 real estate, $3000 personal wealth, b. Canada.

The 1870 Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., New York census finds Henry A. (Read) age 35, a cigar manufacturer with an estimated land value of $12,000 and personal property valued at $6,000, it goes on to state he was born in Canada. Henry's wife Sarah M. (28) and two young sons Henry N. (4) and James W. (2 ) were living with him, along with his mother Mary (60) from Ireland and a James H. (Read) age 16. This James H. Read leads me to believe our Henry A. Read may have had children of a previous marriage and the 7 year age difference between Henry and Sarah could indicate this possibility.

The 1900 census finds the family living in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York. Henry is still employed as a cigar maker at age 65 he stated his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Ireland, he himself was born in Canada. He stated he and Sarah had been married for 34 years and 3 of the 4 children born to the were still living in 1900 (son Henry having died in 1899).

The 1920 census shows Henry living in Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., New York. (E.D. 155, P. 1A).
