Abel was enumerated in close proximity to Robert Gotham and his wife Cynthia (Rice) Gotham from the time of the 1820 census in Pamelia, Jefferson Co., New York to 1830 Depeau, Saint Lawrence Co., New York and once again on the 1850 Hermon, Saint Lawrence Co., New York.

On the 1850 census he was living with his son Leonard age 40, a farmer who stated he was born in MA. Abel stated he was 83, a cooper, and that he too had been born in MA. (abt. 1767).
