John was found on the 1900 census in Volney, Oswego Co., New York with his wife Elvira, and 2 of thier 3 children at home; Nellie and Nor?. John stated he was a compositor, and both daughters stated they were book keepers.

John married Elvira M. 1867, Probably . New York. Elvira was born Dec 1844, New York; died Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

John was baptised April 1, 1814, in Swaffham, Norfolk, England. His parents were indicated as John Hewett a stocking manufacturer, and Ann Templeman,

John arrived in New York, May 11, 1846, aboard the "Switzerland" which came from London, England. He came with his pregnant wife Ann and four of their children. The family remained for a while in New York City.

John is cited as the Reverend of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Fulton, Oswego Co., New York from 1849-1850.

The 1850 census finds John's family living in Fulton Township, Oswego Co., New York. It appears that John's wife had died within the 5 months prior to the census date of August 29, 1850, as she was not listed and there was a son, "William W. Hewitt" age 5 months shown. She may have died from child birth complications.

Town of Gouverneur, From Child's Gazetteer of St. Lawrence County, 1873-74.
The First M. E. Church , at Gouverneur, was organized with six or eight members, by Benj. Dighton, in 1822. The first church edifice was erected in 1864; the present one which will seat about 500 persons, in 1871, at a cost of $13,500. Rev. Lyndon King was the first pastor, Rev. John T. Hewitt, our informant, is the present one. There are 146 members. The Church property is valued at $15,500. There is a gradual increase in the congregation and a corresponding one in the membership, which indicates a prosperous future.

John married MAYFIELD, Ann Hephzibah Between Apr 1839 and Jun 1839, Spaulding, Lincolnshire, England. Ann was born Abt 1819, England; died Between Mar 1850 and Aug 1850, Probably Fulton, Oswego County, New York. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Upon Arrival in New York on May 11, 1846, Ann was recorded as Hippylite Hewitt age 27 (likely a corruption of her middle name Hephzibah).
