    Notes:

    John Harvey Merrifield b. 19-2-1863 Ashland, Mo. Boone County, near Columbia. He came to Hardin, Ray County, Mo. with his parents Anson and Sarah Frances Fortney Merrifield, 11-10-1869. He married Julia Ann Campbell of Alligan, Michigan, formerly of Hardin, Mo. 15-9-1886. She was born 6-12-1866 near Hardin, Mo. Her father was Benjamin F. Campbell born 1827, died 1879. Her mother was Nancy J. Thomas Campbell born 1845 and died 28-12-1870. She had one brother, George T. Campbell born 1865, died 10-3-1889. Nancy J. died when she was 25 years old, George was 5 years old and Julia was 4 years old. The father sent them to their aunt and uncle in Alligan, Michigan and they stayed there until he married again and they came back to Missouri and lived with their father and step-mother until he died. The home was located 2 1/2 miles north and east of Hardin. After their father's death Julia Ann and George went back to their relatives in Michigan. John Harvey Merrifield went to Michigan and married Julia Ann and they came back to Mo. along with her brother George. They set up housekeeping on a farm 1/2 mile north of Hardin. George lived with John Harvey and Julia Ann until his death. They are all buried in the Hardin Cemetery.
    John Harvey and Julia Ann lived on the farm north of Hardin until 1901 when they moved south west of Hardin. They lived there where Julius Harvey was born. The other children were gorn on the farm north of Hardin. In 1933 Julia was in a car wreck and received a broken back and was in a hospital in Kansas City, Mo. John Harvey was staying at his son's home in the city and died there 14-4-1933. She later returned home and lived there until 1940 when she moved to Hardin, Mo. She died there 26-4-1944.
    John Harvey and Julia were members of the Hardin Methodist Church. He was a member of the Hardin Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodge. He played the organ for revivals at both the Hardin and Henrietta, Mo. Methodist churches. He operated a threshing machine, threshing crew and cook-shack for custom work along with the farming operation. Both John Harvey and Julia Ann were good neighbors in their community and helped in every time of need, and were faithful church members. A beautiful stained glass window in the vestibule of the Hardin Methodist church bears the name of Mr. and Mrs. John Merrifield.

    I can give you some information on Sarah Frances, Manerva Jane and Kizziah Clementine Fortney as the relatives kept in touch as they moved on to Carroll, Ray and Jackson Counties of Missouri. I have working on the Merrill, Fortney and Merrifield family lines since 1970. . . . I'm enclosing 4 pictures also. I hope some of the information will be a help to you. I would like to keep in touch and if you want more on the extended family I will send it to you. . . . Thank you for caring about the past.


    Columbia Missouri Herald, 13 February 1891, p. 5, col. 3:
    ASHLAND. Anderson Meryfield and wife, formerly citizens of this county, now residing at Hardin, in Ray county, for the past week were her looking after some lands that they own south of Ashland and to visit relatives of his wife. She is ae of Whery Fortney, John Fortney and Mrs. James Boswell. They speak very favorably of their country praising it as the best to be found in Missouri with business brisk and a regular demand for all kinds of mechanics and laborers.

    Sallie Merrifield writes:
    Anson Merrifield was born in Gallatin County, Kentucky near Louisville, Kentucky, February 3 1840. He moved with the family to Woodville, Missouri a town of 100 population located in Macon County near Macon, Missouri in 1854. The familyd to Ashland, Boone County, Missouri near Columbia in 1859. He married Sarah Frances Fortney of Ashland on May 22 or 27, 1862. Boone County marriage records give the date May 27, 1862 and Anson's name as Hanson. Her parents were Martin Fortney and Catherine String Fortney. The 1860 Census of Boone County, Missouri Cedar Township page 711 lists Martin Fortney as 47 years old and a farmer, born in Kentucky 1794 [sic!]. His wife Catherine had died March 29, 1860. The following children were listed: Sarah Frances 17 (1843) born in Missouri, Margaret A. 15 (1845) Manerva Jane 13 (1847) Kizziah Clementine 11 (1849) and Francis M. 8 (1852) all born in Missouri.     Anson Merrifield and family came to Hardin, Ray County Missouri October 11, 1869. Anson was a blacksmith, wagon-maker, saw mill operator and farmer. He was the Hardin city marshall at one time and the president of the Hardin school boarm 1889 to 1892. He was a member of the Hardin Methodist Church and the Hardin Masonic Lodge. The family lived in town 7 years then moved to a farm 3/4 of a mile west of Hardin. They lived there 32 years. This farm was later owned by Earl Gibson, L.Z. Williams and now by Cecil King (1975). This farm is located on Highway 10 west of Hardin on the south side of the road. The old house was a one story log house and in later years was enlarged and rebuilt and now stands a large two-story frame house. Eleven children were born to Anson and Sarah Frances. Two died in infancy, and the others were Maggie John Harvey, Nannie McBaine, William Anson, Mollie Mae, Linnie Neal, Ella Dean, Ammie Lena and Katie Frances.

    ASHLAND ITEMS.
    A two year old child of Martin Fortner's living near Ashland, fell in the well last Tuesday morning and was only discovered in time to be rescued alive. It had been in the water some twenty minutes when found. After considerable rubbing aministering of stimulants it was brought to life, and at this time is quite well.
