Notes:

Robert J. Snapp played a central role in the establishment of the Shenandoah National Park System, and had a letter published in the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record on December 19, 1923 advocating a National Park in the Massanutten area. He suggested the establishment of a national park for Shenandoah Valley, months before it was organized and before the government took it up.

From an article in the "Valley Banner" August 10, 1972 (Elkton, Virginia); "His favorite diversion was fishing, and he enjoyed the mountains.

As a youngster he worked on a farm, then did cabinet & carpenter work.
Joined the railroad at 20 as telegrapher at Port Republic, Virginia, then as agent & telegrapher at Greenville, Virginia. Later to Stanley, Virginia, and Tobuchan & Buena Vista asagent.

Came to Elkton in 1894 as general agent & telegrapher and continued in that capacity until 1935 when he retired.

He started with the railroad as a telegrapher and remained with the Norfolk & Western for 51 years, serving the company in a loyal and faithful manner until his retirement.
Born in Romney, West Virginia, he attended country school for a short time but was forced to go to work at an early age.
He was mayor of Elkton, served as a member of the School board and on the council of Elkton".

Robert J. Snapp

In the work and life accomplishments of Robert J. Snapp is given an evidence of the desirability of closely adhering to one line of endeavor, for he has risen to be agent for the Nor-folk & Western Railroad at Elkton through the various stages of railroad work, and has been connected with railroading since he completed his high-school course. He was born near Romney West Virginia, July 17, 1865 but was only a child when his parents moved to Virginia and his life has been practically spent in the "old dominion".

Reared in the different cities in which his father had charges, Robert J. Snapp attended the high school of Port Republic, as before stated, and completing his schooldays, entered upon what was to be his life work, as an employee of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad Company in 1884, and in this connection, while still at Port Republic, he began learning telegraphy. When he had mastered this calling he was stationed at different points along the road, and in time was operator and agent at Stanley, Buchanan, Buena Vista and Elkton, and remained here since 1894.

When Mr. Snapp came to Elkton to take charge of the company's business the station, the first one built in the city by his company, was a mere shack, with practically no accommodations for agent or passengers. Subsequently a more adequate one was erected, but in time it, too, had to give way for a third, when, in 1911, the present commodious station was built.

Mr. Snapp has not been contented to merely act as agent for his company. He has entered heartily into the life of the community, and borne his part in different civic movements. For some years he has been an active member of the school board of Elkton, and in the spring of 1922 was elected a member of the City Council, although he has never cared to take a prominent part in politics. In the faith of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, he finds expression for his religious belief, and is zealous in behalf of the Elkton congregation of that denomination. Well-known in Masonry, he has taken a decidedly active part in his fraternity, and is a member of Elkton Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of which he is past master; and of Milnes Chapter No, 18, Royal Arch Masons, of Shenandoah, Virginia.

On December 19 1895, Robert J. Snapp married at Elkton Miss Kate Harnsberger, a daughter of Charles E. and Kate (Wolfe) Harnsberger. Mrs. Snapp was born at Elkton, March 30, 1875 and after attending the local schools, completed her education at Doctor Hyde's School at Winchester, Virginia. She is the youngest in the following family: Alfred, Mrs. Annie Firebaugh, Mrs. Virginia Bishop (deceased), Charles Edward, J. Oscar and Clinton T.

Mr. and Mrs. Snapp have the following children; Robert J., Junior who is cashier of the Elkton station of the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company, spent a term in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and he married Mary Gibbons; Sidney H., who is a graduate of the Elkton High School, is a clerk in the offices of the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company's office at Elkton; Elsie Evelyn, who is a student of the Harrisonburg State Normal School; and Sarah Kathleen, who is a high school student, is the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Snapp have sought to give their children excellent educational advantages, for they feel that with such a training they are prepared for whatever is demanded of them by the world in any station of life to which they may be called.

Having lived here for nearly thirty years, Mr. Snapp's interests are all centered at Elkton, and he knows practically all the patrons of his road, with whom he is deservedly popular because of the expert and courteous treatment he accords everyone at all times.

Rev. Silas R. Snapp grew up near Slanes Crossroads, Hampshire County, West Virginia.
With the outbreak of the war between the North and the South he espoused the cause of the Confederacy, and subsequently entered it's army, but did not see active service.
A man of fine mentality, although given but few educational opportunities, he studied by himself to such good effect that In 1868 he entered the Methodist Conference of West Virginia, and subsequently that of the Baltimore Southern Methodist Conference, continuing with the latter until his death, which occurred. in March, 1895, when he was about sixty-five years old.
During the many years he was in the ministry he was stationed at different points In Virginia, and spent some time at Port Republic, where his son Robert completed his high school training.

There is a record of a S.R. Snapp who entered the 51st. Virginia Militia, Co. D, as a Private, and left as a 1st. Seargent.

He was a farmer by trade. During the Civil War Charles had one of his favorite saddles hidden for him by one of his servants as the Union soldiers raided the family home.

At Wars end Charles found himself with barrels of useless Confederate money currency, most of which was valueless and burned. Some remains in the family today.

Catherine, in her late 20's during the Civil War, recalled an episode where a Union soldier came into their home, put on a bonnet and began parading around the place.

John "known as Johnie" and his family lived on the nucleus of the old Snapp estate, about one-halh mile south of Salem church, and they are buried on the home farm. The Snapps were slaveholders, democrats and Methodists.

Stephen Smith, was one of the old circuit riders of the Methodist Episcopal Church, whose field of work, long prior to the war, was in the territory lying along the south branch of the Potomac River in what is now West Virginia, and in the Valley of Virginia as far south as Fincastle. It was at Staunton, Virginia that his daughter Sarah was educated.
Stephen served as Pastor of the little "Old Church" located on the farm or plantation of his father, Timothy F. Smith. This church stood at the foot of Short Mountain and was called "Asbury Chapel."

Smith, the Rev. Stephen, died near Paw Paw (Morgan Co., WV) on the Monday before Oct. 14th, 1871 (Oct. 9, 1871).
He was in the ministry for over 50 years, according to the South Branch Intelligencer, issue of Oct. 20, 1871.
He was buried in the Francis W. Heiskell graveyard, near the Cacapon River, near end of County Road 29/2.
The farm is now owned by Edward Milburn (as of 1990).
The inscriptions shows that the Rev. Stephen Smith was born on Nov. 1, 1802 and died on Oct. 9, 1871. "God was with him, Acts 7:9.
Another grave next to him is marked only by an uninscribed slate stone.

Jeremiah and his brother Henry were twins. He built the "River Bend" house, southwest of Elkton in 1833. The house was constructed of brick by slaves. The original barn was burned by Federal soldiers during the Civil War. The second was built in 1868 and burned in July 1953. The land the homes of Jeremiah, John, Adam & Henry are built on is the land originally owned by Stephan Harnsberger, their grandfather.

Jeremiah was a soldier in the War of 1812. He served under Coleman in the 6th Regiment, Virginia Militia (Aug-Dec. 1814) and served as a corporal.

Although Jeremiah was at one point an anti-Jackson man he eventually changed his opinion, and he and Elizabeth would open their home to General Andrew Jackson when he would travel through the area. One story states that after Andrew Jackson arrived at their home late one afternoon, Elizabeth sent one of the servants to enquire if there was anything special the General would like for supper that evening. General Jackson, being a man of simple tastes, replied "Just some cold cornbread and buttermilk".

This biography was written about Alfred's son Alfred Jr., however it contains the following entry regarding Alfred Sr.
..."Dr. Alfred L. Wolfe, father of the subject of this sketch, was born at Culpeper Court House in 1809, and died in 1858. He was a Physician by profession, and practiced at Rockingham throughout his entire career. He had a splendid education, and enjoyed an exceedingly large practice. He took an active part in the affairs of his county, and was held in the highest esteem wherever known. Fraternally Dr. Wolfe was an Odd Fellow. He was joined in the bonds of matrimony with Sarah E. Ammon, who was born in Rockinham County in 1819. They had two children Alfred L., Jr., the subject of this sketch; and Sarah C., who married Richard E. Hopkins, a merchant residing in McGaheysville, Rockingham County. Mrs. Wolfe is now living at the home of her son, in the full enjoyment of all he faculties, and possesses the activity of a woman many years her junior"...

Notes:

It appears that Anna died the same day her last child Alfred was born, which while not unusual, it must have been a terrible blow to her husband Alfred who was a well respected doctor in the area.
