  1. 2.  WOLFE, Lewis was born Between 1731 and 1748, Probably Mannheim, Germany; died 5 Sep 1791, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Lewis Wolfe and his wife Catherine were natives of Germany, who emigrated to America.

They appear to have christened Ludwig (Lewis) Jr. in Frederick Co., Maryland in June 1766, and settled in Winchester, Virginia shortly afterwards.

In Winchester there was a Hotel by the name of "The Golden Buck" on Market, just south of Town Run. The Hotel's proprietor was a man named Philip Bush, and Lewis was a merchant in the hotel. Both men were said to have been from Mannheim, Germany.

Lewis became a very prominent man and was engaged in mecantile pursuits, and was a trustee of the Winchester Academy in 1787.

The couple reared a large family of children and gave them an exceptionally fine education. One son, Thomas, was a pupil in one of the German Universities, and another son Lewis, developed into a promising lawyer, becoming a leading politician, representing his district in the State Legislature. One daughter married a brother of Wade Hampton, Sr.

Winchester had an author by the name of C. Toler Wolfe who was related to Lewis Wolfe. C. Toler Wolfe wrote "Echoes from the past or Winchester and it's environs in olden times".

Land Records indicate that a Lewis Wolfe bought land from Robert Ashby on September 2, 1766.
He bought 254 acres of land from Peter Stevens on March 5, 1771.
He bought more land on November 4, 1776

All purchases in Frederick Co., Virginia.

He appears on the Tax Rolls in Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia in 1786
