Biographical Notes, Excerpts from Earl Kelly's recollections, Date: 10-25-95.
After marrying Alice I. Gleason near Chicago in 1869, Joseph and Alice remained in McHenry Co., Illinois at least until Charles Louis Kelly was born in 1876. In the early spring of 1878 the couple arrived in California, and homesteaded 1/4 section at Oregon House, southeast of Oroville, in Yuba Co., CA, They soon removed to Marysville, Yuba Co., CA circa 1889, however Joseph left his son Charles L. Kelly at Oregon House, to care for Joseph's mother, Mary A. Kelly who had become disabled. Following his mother's death at Oregon House in 1896, where she is likely buried, Joseph traded the homestead for a horse and buggy. The family then moved to Redding, Shasta Co., CA. in the early 1900's. Joseph and Alice lived near Buckeye in the Stillwater district, northeast of Redding.

To find the old homestead at Oregon House:
Go towards Brownsville from Oregon House. Not too far past the road to Lake of the Springs (Lake Mildred) where the road crosses Dry Creek there is a house on the right; that is the old Kelly homestead where C.L. Kelly grew up.
