RAZEE The Razee family is one of long and honorable standing in that part of Massachusetts and Rhode Island on either side of the line separating the two states, and since the middle, or before, of the eighteenth century the town of Cumberland, now a Rhode Island subdivision, has been their home. Especial reference is made to the family of the late Hon. Stafford Whipple Razee, who himself for so many years was one of the leading men of his community, representing it repeatedly in both branches of the general assembly of Rhode Island, and in various ways serving it in other official and useful capacities.

(I) Joseph Razee, the first of this name in Rhode Island, purchased several tracts of land along Diamond Hill Plains, in Cumberland.

Joseph — WHIPPLE, Sarah. Sarah (daughter of WHIPPLE, David Ensign and TOWER, Hannah) was born 18 Nov 1687, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island; died 27 Sep 1727, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

David (sometimes called Daniel) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1655, and was baptized there Sept. 28, 1656. He was the son of John and Sarah Whipple. He married, May 15, 1675 , Sarah Hearnden, b. 1654, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (White) Hearnden. She died April 2, 1677, and he married, second, in Hingham, Massachusetts, Nov. 11, 1677, widow Hannah(Tower) Cowell, who was baptized in Hingham, July 17, 1652, the daughter of John and Margaret (Ibrook) Tower. She had had one child by her first husband, Joseph, b. Dec. 29, 1673. They lived in Providence, R.I., until 1692, on an estate left him by his father. They then moved to Attleboro, Massachusetts which was set off from Rehoboth in 1694. He is called "Ensign". On his will, dated Mar. 24, 1709, proved Jan. 8, 1711, he names wife Hannah, executrix; mentions sons David , Israel, Jeremiah and William. He died, Dec. 18, 1710, at Attleboro; his widow died, Nov.1722 , aged 70 years. Her will, made May 28, 1720, proved Dec. 8, 1722, names her son Joseph Cowell ; her children Jeremiah Whipple, DeborahTower, Sarah Razee, Israel and William.

He lived in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, on the estate left to him by his father. Around 1692, he bought land in the township of Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, in an area that later became Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island. David bought land that was originally part of the Rev. William Blackstone's tract on the banks of the Blackstone River. He was also an ensign in the militia.

David died in Rehoboth on 18 December 1710; he was two months past his fifty-fourth birthday. His will, dated 24 March 1709 and proved 8 January 1710/1, provided (ellipses denote where the corner of the page of the original record is torn off):

" In the name of God Amen. I David Whiple of the Town of Rehoboth in the Province of the Masachset Bay in new England being (Through mercey) at present in good health & of sound & perfect memory but not knowing how soon I may be Removed out of this world & being willing to set my house in order by [invokeing?] a dispossition of my worldly Estate according to my own mind Do make this to be my last will & Testament make void & null and revokeing all & every wills at any time by me made Either by word or writting and this will only to stand and be in form:
Imppms I give and bequeath my soule to God who gave it and my body to the Earth to be buryed by my Executrix herein after named.
Item I do give & bequeath to my son David Whipple the sum of Ten pounds in mony to be payd unto him or to his heires or assigns wthin one years time after my decease and the reason why it is no more is because I have formerly given to him consierable out of my estate.
Item I do give & bequeath to my son Israel Whipple one shilling in money to be payd to him his heires or Assigns within one year time after my decease & the Reason why it is no more is because I have formerly Invested him in land by Deed of Gif.
Item I do give & bequeath to my son Jeremiah whipple one shilling in money And the Reason why it is no more is because I have formerly Invested him by lands by Deed of Gift & the said shilling is to be within one year after my decease.
Item I do give & bequeath to my Son William Whipple one shilling in money to be payd to him or his heires or assigns within one years time after my decease And the Reason why it is no more is because I have formerly Invested him in lands by ded of Gift.
Item I do give & Devise unto my two Daughters (viz) Sarah Whipple and Abigail Whipple as Equal partners both in quantytie and qualytie All that my lands & meadow lyeing and being on the south Easwardly side of the high way It being part of thearme the which I Purchased of John Baxtor the which devises lyeing from my house Downward of the streame of the River and is bounded on the Records.
As allso I do give and devise unto said two Daughters in manner as aforesd the one half of the lott of land which I Purchased of Solomon Carpenter the whole lott being fifty acres (be it more or less) as it is bounded on Record.
As allso together with the said Devised lands I do give & devise unto my said tow Daughters in manner as aforesaid one quarter part . . . undevided Right of lands in Rehoboth, North Purchased . . . All which said Devised lands one scittuate lyeng & being . . . Township of Rehoboth and in the Township of Attlebo[rough] . . . in one of the Townships and part in the other Township & Every of the Appurtenaces to be unto my said . . . manner as aforesaid to them their heires . . . But in Cases [?] should so fall & be that my . . . should dye before . . . no Issue . . . Aforesaid three sons namely Israel Whiple jerimiah Whipple & William Whipple & my Daughter Deborah Tower to be Equally Divided amongst them four in manner as aforesaid To be unto them their heires & Assigns for Ever Allwayes Provided & [?] my wife Hannah Whipple shall have all the benefits profits & Improvement of all that sd land and meadows Dureing the whole terme of her Naturall Life and that no person shall make Entry into the lands or any part thereof untill after her Decease .
And I do allso give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Hannah Whipple my best Bed and all the furniture to it belonging and allso all the Rest of my household Goods of what sort soever with all my money and all my stock of Cattle of what sort sover & all other my moveable Etate whatever not before Desposed To be her own proper Estate.
And I do make ordaine & appoint my said beloved wife to be my sole Executrix who shall [Receive?] all debts from any person to me due And to pay all my Debts from me Due to any person and to see that my Body be Decently buried & to Execut thisy will according to the true meaning & intent thereof.
And allso as I gave unto my aforesd three sons each of them one shilling in money so I do likewise give unto my Daughter Deborah Towers one shilling in money to be payd unto her or her heires or assigns with in the span of one years time aftery Decease and the Reason why it is no more is because I have foremerly Invested her land by Deeds of Gifte.
In witness of the promises I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 24th march 1709/10.
Whereas I have in this my Last will Devised Certain lands to my two Daughters Sarah Whipple & Abigail Whipple my will is that in Case Either of them should dye without Issue that then her part of land that [?][?] shall goe to the surviver of thm two her heires & assignes forever."

His inventory was dated 1 January 1710/1:

" An Inventory of the Estate of Ensigne David Whiple late of Rehoboth Decd taken by us the subscribers this first day of January 1710.

his Purse in Plate & Bills, his wearing Apparrel, his books, Armes and Amminision, Tobacco Box, tongs & knife, the est Bed and furniture, another Bed and furniture, another bed and furniture, another Bed & furniture, another Bed and furnitue & smale bed, two Trunks, 2 Chests & three boxes,wosted yarn, Linnin yarn, flax & wooll, three peices of New Cloath, six Chaires, a Looking Glass, 2 [barks/backs] & baskets, two great wheels & a Linnen wheel & [?], Nine Napkins, 7 Pillow beers, 3 pair of sheets, five brass Kettles and two skillets, pewter, Earthen ware & Glass bottles, 3 Iron pots & Iron Kettles & Trammel, frying pan & warming pan, Chafin Dish, 2 Candlesticks, Box Iron & heater & [?ing] iron, ten Chaires, a Table & stool & Gridiron, 14 Trayes, 2 Churns, 2 butter Tubbs, Cheese prese & 2 [?], [?] & Tubb & firkin of Hogs fatt, pailes & Tubbs & other Lumber, money scales & two pair of old Cards, Tallow & Candles, Saddle, brydle & Curry Comb, steel Trayes, Beetle wedges & Grinstone & hors Chaines, Cart wheels, yoak & Chaines, 28 Barrills of Sider and Tobacco, five piggs & 2 hives of Bees, half of a Cider press & Mill and Grinstone & Harrow, Pork, Beefe and Mutton, Beer and Caske & 3 barrells of Cider, Indian Corn, Rye & Oats, beans & pease & sithes & sneeds, one plow & plow Irons, Horses, Cattle & Goates & their winter meat, Coppers Tooles and two baggs, one hogge and heiffer, the land and meadow on the south side of the way, half a 50 acres lot that was Solomon Carpenters, land that Lyeth by Benjamin Towers, yarn at the weavers, seven Cheeses."

Hannah died in Rehoboth in November 1722 at the age of seventy. Her will, dated 28 May 1720 and proved 8 December 1722, provided:

"In the Name of God Amen the Twenty Eighth day of may one thousand seven hundred Twenty.

I Widow Hannah Whipple of Attleborough in ye County of Bristol and Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England being aged and weak in Body but of perfect Mind and Memory thatnks be Given unto God therefore Calling unto minde the mortalliy of my Body and Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye Doe make & ordaine this my last will ans Testiment that is to say principally and first of all I give and Recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it & my Body I Recommend to the Earth to be Buried in decent Christian Burial by my son Jeremiah Whipple and as touching such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to bless mee with in this Life: I Give and bequeath and devise & dispose of the same in ye following manner and form:
Imprimis I Give and bequeath to my son Joseph Cowell Ten pounds in money or Current Bills of Credit to be Raysed out of my Estate.
Item I give unto my Son Jeremiah Whipple twenty shillings In money and the Reason why I give him no more is because I have not received nor charged him with the yearly rent which was acorded me by Bond for maintinance.
Item I give unto my Daughter Deborah Tower one fether Bed with all the furniture belonging to the said Bed and one chest of drawes with all that is in said chest at my decease and the one half of my apparel booth woollen and Lining sheets and pllibeirs.
Item I give unto my daughter Sarah Razie my fether Bed one which I now Lye with all the furniture belonging to said Bed and the other halfe of my apparell boath Wollen and Lining sheets and Pillibeirsand one chest of drawes with all that is inaid Chest at my decease.
Item I give unto my fower children viz Isreall Whipple & WIlliam Whipple and Deborah Tower and Sarah Razey all the remaining parts of my estatewhat so ever whether money Brasse Iron or Pewter Neate Cattle Swine or horse kinde to be equally devied amongst them in equall proportion one with another.
Likewise my son Israell Whipple I Constitute make and ordaine my sole executor of this my last will and Testiment and I do hereby [?vey] disalloe Revoake and disannul all and every other and former Testiment wills Legacies and bequests and exectors by mee in any ways to be named [?] and confirming this and no other to bee my last will and testiment.
In witness whereof I have here unto sett my hand and seal the day and yeare above written and in the sixth yeare of ye Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord George by the Grace of God of Greate Britten King &tc Signed Sealed Published proclaimed and delared by said Hannah Whipple as her last will and Testiment."

An inventory of her estate, dated 25 October 1722 and presented in court on 8 December 1722, listed the following:

" An inventory of ye Estate of ye Widow Mrs Hannah Whipple last of the town of Attleborough deceased taken by us ye subscribers this 25 of October 1722.

Silver money at 15 weight 15.03.07, paper money 65.07.00, Books, wearing apparill, pewter, earthen wayre, Glass bottles, brass, Iron wayre, a hatchel and tine wayre, one looking glass, wheate and rye & one other Potte, wooden wayr & honney andmala_y?], one mayre & a cow & 4 Swine, Cheese, sheets and pillowbiers & napkins & other Lening, 2 Chests, one bed and Bedsted, one peck of salt & wooden Waire, Cotten wooll & Sheeps Wooll, cotten yairn and Woollen yairn, flax, money seiles & 2 payre of specktacles, a Canthorn & a bonnet, hey & 4 stocks of bees, wheat on ye Ground, one brasse Kettle, Iron Wayre, wooden waire, 3 Cowes & a heffer, butter & chees, one box Iron & heaters & one Pillion, one fether bed forgott.

The total value of the goods inventoried was �198.10.00. Her son William, the administrator of her estate, submitted the following accounting, dated 7 January 1723 and approved on 23 January of that same year, to the probate court:

The accompt of William Whipple Administrator Cum Testimento Annexo of all and singular the Goods and Chattels of his mother Mrs Hannah Whipple late of the town of Attleborough deceased as [?] and for so much of the said Goods and Chattells as hth Come to his hands as of and for ye Payments & disbursements out of ye same.

The accomptant chargeth himself with all and singular the goods and chattels of the deceased conteined in an Inventory there of made and exhibited unto ye Regestry of the Court of Probate of wills for ye County of Bristoll bearing date the tweny fifth of October Anna 1722 ammounting to ye sum of one hundred Ninety pounds ten shillings: 198.10.00

David married TOWER, Hannah 11 Nov 1677, Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Hannah (daughter of TOWER, John and IBROOK, Margaret) was born 17 Jul 1652, Hingham, Massachusetts; died Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

John's birthplace is speculated in several locations, Milford, Pembroke, Wales or Milford, Surry, England. His recorded immigration lists John Whipple of Bocking, Essex County, England, in 1632, as a passenger on a ship called "The Lyon", with Mr. William Peirce as Master. "The Lyon" sailed from London, June 22, 1632 and arrived September 16, 1632 at Boston. On 3 Oct. 1632 John was ordered to give3s. 4d. to his master Israel Stoughton for wasteful expenditure of powder and shot. John married Sarah (They or Darling ?) about 1639. She was born 1624 and died 1666, according to her gravestone. His house was near what is now called Neponset. He removed to Ipswich and became a proprietor of that town in 1638. His brother, Matthew Whipple, also settled at Ipswich and was the ancestor of many Essex County and New Hampshire families. John Whipple returned to Dorchester and was a freeman and deputy to the general court, May 13, 1640. He was one of the court's commissioners of valuation in 1640. He was engaged in trade with William Paine and others in 1647. He had the rank of cornet in the military service. He was a town officer of Dorchester. He and his wife joined the Dorchester church, in 1641. In 1658, John sold his house and some 40 or 50 acres of land in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to James Minot, and soon after moved with his family to Providence, Rhode Island. Land was granted to him in Providence on July 27, 1659, and drew lot 45 as proprietor February 19, 1665. He took the oath of allegiance in 1666. He was a deputy from Providence to the general assembly in 1666-69-70-72-74-76-77. He was licensed to keep a tavern at Providence in 1674. He was treasurer of the town from 1668 to 1683; town clerk 1670-71-72-76-77-81-82-83. He was in the Providence town council in 1669. He was virtually a resident of Providence after 1659. He refused to abandon his home during King Philip's War and was one of those entitled to the Indian prisoners, who were sold for a term of years to the planters. John Whipple died May 16, 1685, at Providence, aged about sixty-eight years, according to his gravestone there. John sold land in Ipswich on May 31, 1673.

John married DARLING, Sarah 1637, Dorchester, Suffolk, England. Sarah (daughter of DARLING, George and GRIDLEY, Katherine, daughter of MUCKLE, Isabel) was born 1624, Dorchester, Massachusetts; died 1666, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island; was buried , Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. Notes:

John was bapt. Hingham, Eng., May 17, 1609, the son of Robert and Dorothy Tower. He came with John Ford and Samuel Lincoln, an ancestor of President Abraham Lincoln, in 1635, from old Hingham, England, to new Hingham, Massachusetts. He settled in 1637, and was a freeman, 1638. On February 13, 1638-9, He married Margaret Ibrook, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on Feb. 13, 1639, she was born in England, in 1617, the daughter of Richard and (?) (Clark) Ibrook. During King Philip's War he fortified his dwelling at Hingham later known as Tower's Garrison House. With his four sons and one or two others hired at his own expense he defended it, and the twenty people who had taken refuge in it, throughout the war . When the town had to have any dealings with the Indians they would say, "You go, old John Tower, the Indians all know you and won't hurt you." On 11 December 1671, John Tower Sr. of Hingham, planter, and Margaret his wife sold to Stephen French Sr. of Weymouth, yeoman, three lots of land in Hingham, each containing six acres. John's wife died at Hingham, May 15, 1700, age 83, and he died, Feb. 13, 1702, age 92, leaving 39 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. It is probable that he could not write as he signed the many deeds and conveyances by his mark.

John married IBROOK, Margaret 13/13 Feb 1638/1639, Charlestown, Masachusetts. Margaret (daughter of IBROOK, Richard and CLARK, Margaret) was born 3 Sep 1620, Hingham, Norfolk, England; died 15 May 1700, Hingham, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]
