Notes:

Ward was born on Halloween as was his father. He graduated from Colgate University in 1937. He joined the Marines as a 2nd Lt. and retired with the rank of Major following 3 1/2 years of service in the Pacific.

Ward was almost buried a live in the Pacific Campaign of WWII, while fighting as a Marine.

After his military career Ward pursued a career with Colgate-Palmolive and with Union Camp Paper Co. as a company representative and spent a lot of time on the road in this capacity.

Ward has a son named Ward Paige who flies for Hawaiian Airlines and lives in Hawaii.

Notes:

Alfred owned and operated the family's Ogdensburg brickyard until the Depression of the 1920's - 1930's caused it to close down. Alfred's grand daughter Shirley remembered visiting with her grandparents when she was a small child, at the brickyard. She recalled that Alfred (Fred) would capture fish for her and put them in a bath tub so she could see them swim around. Alfred and Ella raised four boys together in Ogdensburg.

The 1900 census finds Ella living with her parents and 2 living siblings in Ogdensburg, New York. She was employed as a stenographer at the time and was 27 years old.

Ella may very well be the longest lived individual in this genealogy, living to the age of 103.
She has been described as a very independent woman who spoke her mind. One story told by her daughter-in-law Gladys, recalled that Ella, who after the death of her husband Alfred S. Paige, would travel between the families of her four sons and stay with each son's family for a certain amount of time. As the story goes, while staying with Glady's & Henry for a while she got into a battle of wills with Gladys and at one point in the disagreement Ella left the room, packed her bags and walked herself to the bus stop. A short while later she was picked up by Gladys and brought back home.

The "St. Lawrence Co." Section 3, Page 107 states that Alfred was a Mason and was among Ogedensburg's most esteemed citizens and business men. The article also states that the brickyard firm turns out from 18,000,000 to 20,000,000 bricks per year and furnishes employment for a considerable number of hands in Ogdensburg.

Alfred appears in the 1870 Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., census as a brickmaker age 34 with real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property at $1,000. Living with him is his

Alfred's mother Ann was also there with her own assets listed as real estate valued at $3,100 and personal property $300.

Susanna's parents were both born in England and immigrated to the port of New York on May 11, 1846. Susanna's mother Ann must have been preganant with Susanna, as she was born the following September.

Susan age 63, appears on the 1910 census living with Her daughter Mary (Paige) Lewis and son-in-law Lincoln Lewis.
She stated she was widowed, and 4 of her 5 children were still living.

Notes:

Henry ran a cigar shop in the city of Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York. According to his grandson Henry Reid Paige, the cigars in the shop were made by hand.

The 1870 Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence Co., New York census finds Henry A. (Read) age 35, a cigar manufacturer with an estimated land value of $12,000 and personal property valued at $6,000, it goes on to state he was born in Canada. Henry's wife Sarah M. (28) and two young sons Henry N. (4) and James W. (2 ) were living with him, along with his mother Mary (60) from Ireland and a James H. (Read) age 16. This James H. Read leads me to believe our Henry A. Read may have had children of a previous marriage and the 7 year age difference between Henry and Sarah could indicate this possibility.

The 1900 census finds the family living in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., New York. Henry is still employed as a cigar maker at age 65 he stated his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Ireland, he himself was born in Canada. He stated he and Sarah had been married for 34 years and 3 of the 4 children born to the were still living in 1900 (son Henry having died in 1899).
