    Notes:

Henry also known as "Hank" Was a Major General in the United States Marine Corps. Born in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York, he was the son of Alfred S. Paige and Ella M. Reed.
Henry's middle name was Reed, it was misspelled on military records as Reid and was kept as the official spelling from that time on.
Henry was the oldest of four sons. Alfred Paige, Henry's father, owned the brickyard in Ogdensburg and Henry found work there as a young man . Henry would recall that he earned his first few dollars pulling weeds at 5 cents a row, at the age of 6.
Alfred & Ella were determined that no matter how hard times got they would make sure that the boys got a college education and this was quite a task in the midst of the depression and the closing of the brickyard. After attending the Ogdensburg free academy Henry completed a year at St. Lawrence University. While at the University he met his wife to be Gladys Mary Louise Brundage of Canton, New York.
In 1923 Henry was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In addition to his academic pursuits at the academy Henry also played on the Navy football team, track team, and was a member of the crew team. Henry married Gladys following graduation on July 9, 1927 in Potsdam, New York. After completion of the Marine Officers Basic School in Philadelphia Henry returned to Annapolis to try out for the 1928 Olympic team and made it to the finals in the hammer throw. He also made it to the finals in 1932.
After a brief period at the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, D.C. he joined the 2nd Marine Brigade in Nicaragua and was awarded the Nicaraguan Medal of Merit with Citation for his participation against rebel bandits in that country. After returning to the U.S. he lived at Parris Island, South Carolina and then went to the Naval Academy and the anti aircraft direction school in New York. In October of 1932, Lt. Paige began a year at sea as Commander of the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Indianapolis.
On July 1, 1933, during this assignment Henry was sent to pick up the newly elected President, Franklin D. Roosevelt at his home in Campobello and brought him aboard the USS Indianapolis to Annapolis, Maryland. While at Campobello he played softball with 3 of the Roosevelt sons and had a hot dog cooked for him by Eleanor Roosevelt at a bonfire following the game.
In 1934, he Commanded the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Idaho and was promoted to Captain. He then joined the 10th Marine Regiment and was a part of the Caribbean maneuvers of 1935 and 1936.
From 1937 to 1939 he was stationed in Guam and helped plan for airstrips and air bases there.
After returning to the U.S. he went to Parris Island and commanded batteries of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Defense Battalions and was promoted to Major in May,1941.
In June of 1941 he took command of the 3-inch Anti Aircraft Group 5 Defense Battalions and sailed for Iceland that same month. While in Iceland his troops were reviewed by Winston Churchill who stopped over after a conference with President Roosevelt in Nova Scotia. In August of 1942 Henry was promoted to Lt. Colonel and from January, 1943 to November that same year he commanded the Artillery Battalion at the Training Center Marine Barracks at Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina. He left Camp Le Jeune to command the 7th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the Pacific area.
For his service in the Palou Campaign and elsewhere in the Pacific Henry was awarded the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" and was promoted to Colonel in October of 1944.
Following service in both Hawaii and Guam he returned to the U.S. in October, 1945 and began a number of assignments over the next four years in Washinton DC with the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department and the Joint Army & Navy Chemical Warfare Coordination Committee and was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon.
After completion of the course at the National War College in Washington he served as the first President of the Tactics and Techniques Board at the Marine Corps Development Center.
In September, 1953 Henry was promoted to Brigadier General and served as Assistant Commander of the 2nd Marine Division and in 1954 he joined the 1st Marine Division in Korea. For exceptional meritorious service in Korea, he was awarded the Army's Oak Leaf Cluster.
He returned to Camp Pendleton in 1955 and then moved to Quantico, Virginia and served as the director of the Marine Corps Educational Center, and was promoted to Major General in November of 1955.
In July of 1957 Henry was named Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4 (Logistics) at Marine Headquarters in Washington, D.C.. In November, 1959 he assumed the leadership of the 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California and retired from this post in 1961.

He also served as director of the San Diego County Armed Services Center (formerly the USO), Chairman of the Oceanside Building Authority and was a member of the "Friends of the Tri-City Hospital".
Henry also enjoyed playing the stock and bond markets and parlayed a somewhat meager retirement sum into a substantial amount of money.
Relaxation activities included playing golf and occasional trips to the horse track in addition to the social activities he pursued mentioned above.

Henry married BRUNDAGE, Gladys Mary Louise 9 Jul 1927, Potsdam, New York. Gladys (daughter of BRUNDAGE, Perley Jay and CLINTSMAN, Adda May) was born 28 Jun 1904, Degrasse, Saint Lawrence County, New York; died 14 Dec 1989, Oceanside, California. [Group Sheet]

Ella may very well be the longest lived individual in this genealogy, living to the age of 103.
She has been described as a very independent woman who spoke her mind. One story told by her daughter-in-law Gladys, recalled that Ella, who after the death of her husband Alfred S. Paige, would travel between the families of her four sons and stay with each son's family for a certain amount of time. As the story goes, while staying with Glady's & Henry for a while she got into a battle of wills with Gladys and at one point in the disagreement Ella left the room, packed her bags and walked herself to the bus stop. A short while later she was picked up by Gladys and brought back home.

In his early 20's (about 1893) Perley ventured west for a short time as is recorded in a small "autograph" book, where many of his family and friends recorded their thoughts and feelings about the pending journey. He returned to New York and took up farming for a while, and eventually began working with the St. Lawrence Co. Pulp & Lumber Business. He was employed as a "lumber scaler," a job that would take him to the various lumber camps. He would walk the skids and estimate the board feet for the company, this in turn was used as a guage to pay the men in the camps. Perley was said to have been very familiar with the lumber trade and did on occasion use some of the colorful language common in such "all men" trades. At this time the family was living in San Fidel, Canada. In about 1920 Perley retired to Canton, New York to make his home. He purchased the home of Reuben T. Wells on East Main St. where he remained until later in life when he removed to Gouverneur St. In retirement Perley ran a Gas & Oil Service Station on Riverside Dr. Perley was a member of the No. 111, Free and Accepted Masons of St. Lawrence Chapter No. 132 , R. A. M., and St. Lawrence Commandery No. 28, Knights Templar. He was buried in 1942 in Fairview Cemetery, Canton, St. Lawrence, New York.

Silver Hill Fife and Drum Corps.
The following interesting account of a fife and drum corps in the town of Russell was submitted for this column by Mrs. Dorothy Manning, Town Historian.

The old Silver Hill Fife and Drum Corps was composed of nine men from the Silver Hill community of Russell about 65 years ago. The members were Peter Clintsman, drum major; Joseph Van Sant, Stephen Van Sant, Charles Brundage, and Pearl Brundage, snare drummers; William Van Sant and John Van Sant, fife players; Richard Van Sant, bass drummer. George Van Sant drove the corps wagon which was circular in shape and drawn by four horses.

Every Memorial Day the corps would start early in the morning and decorate the graves at the South Russell Cemetery and then come to the village and decorate the graves at the Russell Cemetery and lastly to Hermon Cemetery where they also decorated.

The corps was active for about fifty years, turning out to all military funerals and other community activities.

There are only two of the members still living, they are Joseph Van Sant of Russell and John Van Sant of Mexico, N.Y.

There was an article in "The Frederick Post" newpaper ( August 7, 1931) which stated the following:
Howard T. Jones, acting prohibition director, said the prohibition bureau now was "absolutely opposed to the entrapment of violators or policemen and will not tolerate it in any form."

Howard died in 1957, six days after a fall where he broke his arm, at age 83. The certificate also states he was born in Maryland.

    Howard's Obituary:
"The New" (Frederick, Maryland, September 11, 1957).
    DEATHS
    Taney Jones
Word has been received here of the death of Taney Jones, of near Washington, which occured last week. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George F. Jones also of near Washington, and was known here where he had visited. He was a cousin of Mrs. Leroy Horine, near Frederick, who received word of his death, and was a nephew of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hargett, of this city. Two sons survive.

NOTE: Mrs. Samuel Hargett was Annie Kessler the sister to Howard Taney Jones' mother Ida Kessler, and Mrs. Leroy Horine was the daughter of Samuel and Annie Hargett.

Some accounts of the family state that this branch of the Jones family has ties to the family of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney, and to the Jones family of Ohio that produced 2 college football coaches T.A.D. Jones of Yale and Howard Jones of USC, both of whom played at Yale. TAD's brother Howard also coached at Ohio before Knute Rockne recommended him to USC. however proof of either claim remains elusive.

Howard married SMITH, Nellie Stratton 6 Jun 1905, Washington D. C.. Nellie (daughter of SMITH, Frederick B. and LEWIS, Sarah Ann) was born Abt Jan 1876, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died 22 Jun 1931, Hyattsville, Maryland; was buried , Grummount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland. [Group Sheet]

  6. 13.  SMITH, Nellie Stratton was born Abt Jan 1876, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (daughter of SMITH, Frederick B. and LEWIS, Sarah Ann); died 22 Jun 1931, Hyattsville, Maryland; was buried , Grummount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

    Notes:

Nellie was the mother of Howard Lewis Jones and the step-mother of Carlton Taney Jones.

After living in Pennsylvania most of her life she married Howard Taney Jones and moved to Maryland in June 1905, where she and Howard raised Carlton and Howard to adulthood.

One month after the marriage of her son Howard to Sarah Kathleen Snapp, Nellie became hospitalized and died of a stroke June 22, 1931. She was buried June 24, 1931 at Grummount (Greenmount?) Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

The 1880 census shows Nellie as being 3 years old which conflicts with her Death certificates birth date.
However the 1900 census also shows a birthdate of January 1876.

    Notes:

The wedding announcement was printed on page 4 of the Wahington Post on June 5, 1905, the day before the wedding.

He suggested the establishment of a national park for Shenandoah Valley, months before it was organized and before the government took it up.

    Robert J. Snapp

In the work and life accomplishments of Robert J. Snapp is given an evidence of the desirability of closely adhering to one line of endeavor, for he has risen to be agent for the Nor-folk & Western Railroad at Elkton through the various stages of railroad work, and has been connected with railroading since he completed his high-school course. He was born near Romney West Virginia, July 17, 1865 but was only a child when his parents moved to Virginia and his life has been practically spent in the "old dominion".

Reared in the different cities in which his father had charges, Robert J. Snapp attended the high school of Port Republic, as before stated, and completing his schooldays, entered upon what was to be his life work, as an employee of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad Company in 1884, and in this connection, while still at Port Republic, he began learning telegraphy. When he had mastered this calling he was stationed at different points along the road, and in time was operator and agent at Stanley, Buchanan, Buena Vista and Elkton, and remained here since 1894.

When Mr. Snapp came to Elkton to take charge of the company's business the station, the first one built in the city by his company, was a mere shack, with practically no accommodations for agent or passengers. Subsequently a more adequate one was erected, but in time it, too, had to give way for a third, when, in 1911, the present commodious station was built.

Mr. Snapp has not been contented to merely act as agent for his company. He has entered heartily into the life of the community, and borne his part in different civic movements. For some years he has been an active member of the school board of Elkton, and in the spring of 1922 was elected a member of the City Council, although he has never cared to take a prominent part in politics. In the faith of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, he finds expression for his religious belief, and is zealous in behalf of the Elkton congregation of that denomination. Well-known in Masonry, he has taken a decidedly active part in his fraternity, and is a member of Elkton Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of which he is past master; and of Milnes Chapter No, 18, Royal Arch Masons, of Shenandoah, Virginia.

On December 19 1895, Robert J. Snapp married at Elkton Miss Kate Harnsberger, a daughter of Charles E. and Kate (Wolfe) Harnsberger. Mrs. Snapp was born at Elkton, March 30, 1875 and after attending the local schools, completed her education at Doctor Hyde's School at Winchester, Virginia. She is the youngest in the following family: Alfred, Mrs. Annie Firebaugh, Mrs. Virginia Bishop (deceased), Charles Edward, J. Oscar and Clinton T.

Mr. and Mrs. Snapp have the following children; Robert J., Junior who is cashier of the Elkton station of the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company, spent a term in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and he married Mary Gibbons; Sidney H., who is a graduate of the Elkton High School, is a clerk in the offices of the Norfolk & Western Railroad Company's office at Elkton; Elsie Evelyn, who is a student of the Harrisonburg State Normal School; and Sarah Kathleen, who is a high school student, is the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Snapp have sought to give their children excellent educational advantages, for they feel that with such a training they are prepared for whatever is demanded of them by the world in any station of life to which they may be called.

Having lived here for nearly thirty years, Mr. Snapp's interests are all centered at Elkton, and he knows practically all the patrons of his road, with whom he is deservedly popular because of the expert and courteous treatment he accords everyone at all times.

Robert married HARNSBERGER, Kate Wolfe 19 Dec 1895, Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia.. Kate (daughter of HARNSBERGER, Charles Whitfield and WOLFE, Catherine Bear) was born 30 Mar 1876, Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia; died 4 Mar 1965, Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia; was buried , Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia.
