    Notes:

    Christopher stated on his Civil War - Invalid Pension Application, that for 35 years prior to his enlistment in the Army he had resided in Russell, St. Lawrence Co., New York, and that he had resided there since his discharge.
    He went on to state that he had farmed, chopped wood, and cleared land prior to enlisting in the Union Army.
    Regarding his service in the Army he stated "I was taken with a violent cold while at Fort Independence, (Mass.) which was followed by a severe cough, which brought on a pain in my left side. I was sent to Richmond, Va. in the later part of May, 1865. A short time after my arrival there I was taken with chronic diarrhea. I was treated in the regiment for a while and then sent to the hospital"...
    The result of this last illness led to Christopher's discharge.
    Christopher suffered with the side pain and other ailments for years after his discharge. However he stated that he found some relief by spending time in the wilderness, living on wild game and fish.

    He enlisted March 14, 1865 and was released October 15, 1865, total service 7 months and 2 days.
    1890 St. Lawrence County Civil War Veteran Census Transcription Files, Russell, Enumeration District 220. Civil War discharge records show he was released from the Co. D, 2nd Battalion, 17 Regiment. under U.S. Regulars in Richmond, Va. in June 1865, and received back pay for four months and travel pay.

  1. 4.  KLINSMANN, Hans Christophel was born 20 Aug 1752, Hunerdorf, Helmstedt, Braunschweig, Germany (son of KLINSMANN, Matthias and TRIPLER, Ann); died Abt 1810, Probably Champion, Jefferson County, New York.

    Notes:

    Christoph was a mercenary, a professional soldier who was hired out to serve in a foreign army for the money paid. This would indicate he was one of the younger sons who had to find other work other than whatever the family did. The family apparently lived in the area of Germany called Hesse, therefore, Christoph was a Hessian Mercenary who served the British, for pay in our Revolutionary War. He was captured by Gen. Benedict Arnold's troops in one of the two Battles of Saratoga at Freeman's Farm in Sept or Oct, 1777 where he fought under Gen. Burgoyne, but escaped and traveled south toward New York City, following the Hudson River, then later settling in Kinderhook for a time, beginning a new life as an American. (Notes by: Gary Bushaw).

    Notes:

    John Houghtaling, one of the first settlers of Worth, moved his family here (Jefferson Co., NY) with an ox-team in 1802, and located on the farm now occupied by his grandson, Charles Houghtaling. He reared a large family, of whom Peter, Simeon, and William died in Worth. (From Pioneers of Jefferson Co., New York).

    Worth was set off from Lorraine, in 1813. The families of Bullock, Case, Gillet and Houghtailing are some of the names of those who were there in 1802. Population 545.

    The 1850 Census shows only Peter, living in Worth. John and William are known to have migrated west to Wisconsin.

    John appears on the 1850 Census in Farmington, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, (Roll 1000 Book 1, Page 101b), as a 94 year old, born in New York. He was living in the home of his daughter Clarissa Tracy, age 33, her husband Hiram, age 41, and their family. John's wife was not enumerated with them, having presumably died earlier.
    Inidcated in the birth locations of their children is that the family moved from New York to Wisconsin between 1841 and 1844.

    NOTE: Hiram Tracy and William Houghtailing lived next door to each other on the 1840 Lorrain, Jefferson Co., New York census. John appears in the same town 2 pages later, living next door to his son Peter Houghtailing. (recorded as Houghtail).

    In 1782, after the Rev. War, Stoughton located his family in an area called "The Plains" near Oneonta in what was the Montgomery Co., New York (now Otsego Co., New York). Stoughton Alger and his wife Ruth were some of the first settlers to the area leaving when the Indians there became unfriendly but moving back a few years later (about 1788).

    (both of these stones are slate and the faces are starting to chip and fall off.)

    Also there Stoughton Alger died May 19, 1860 age 77 yrs (this is the Jr.) and Sarah Gates, wife of Stoughton Alger died July 2, 1864 age 78yrs 7 mos.
