      Bartolome de Montoya came with his entire famiy in 1600. He was a nativeof Cantillana (near Sevilla, {Spain}], the son of Francisco deMontoya......His wife was Maria de Zamora, born in Mexico City at SanSebastian, the daughter of Pedro de Zamora who was a resident of thatcity and former Alcalde Mayor of Oaxaca {Mexico}. Her mother's name wasAgustina Abarca. ["Archivos General de la Nacion, Mexico: 1. Inquisicion- {Photo copies in the Coronado Library at the University of New Mexico.Some "Inquisicion" references by page, instead of foja, are transcriptcopies owned by Dean Scholes, to be also found in the Library of Congressand Ayer Collection}, t. 462, f. 351]. Maria had married Montoya atTexcoco, [ibid.] and by the time they joined Onate's colony they hadthree boys and two girls, who were all under sixteen in 1600; Francisco,Diego, Jose, Lucia and Pertronila. ["Don Juan de Onate and the Foundingof New Mexico" by George P. Hammond, Santa Fe, 1927]. Bartolome was anAlferez in 1609 when he escorted a band of friars from Zacatecas to SantaFe. ["Archivo General de Indias, Sevilla: 5. Contaduria; {transcriptcopies loaned to Fray Angelico Chavez by Dean France V. Scholes}, leg.711, Data]. This is the last we hear of him.
