  We can presume that the first John Payne was of English descent, and we know that he appeared in old Somerset County and was living there by approximately 1715. Whether he immigrated there from England, New England, Virginia, or some other part of Maryland, or whether he was born there in circumstances humble enough to obscure even his birth, remains unknown. Many Paynes emigrated from England to America in the seventeenth century and at the beginning of the eighteenth.
