Thomas and Sarah emigrated to this country and settled at Dorchester, at what period is not known, but probably about 1635 or 1636, and not in the "Mary and John" in 1630 as has been erroneously stated. Thomas settled in Dorchester, MA, where he signed the church covenant in 1636 and he owned a large tract of land westerly of the Neponset Bridge, and also lands that are now included in the bounds of Sharon and Stoughton. His house stood near the north side of the Creek over which the turnpike road passes, about a quarter of a mile from the Neponset Bridge, His house was within a hundred feet of Pine Neck Creek. He is first mentioned in the Dorchester records where, "It is ordered that Goodman Tolman's house be appointed for the receiving of any goods that shall be bought in whereof the owner is not known." Town records in 1654 show that "Goodman Tolman was paid one shilling for the killing of a wolf." In 1652, at the direction of the selectmen of Dorchester, Thomas Tolman was given charge of a child belonging to Henry Lake, whose wife, Alice, had died. Thomas was to be paid a sum of money each year by the town for raising the child, and to teach him his trade. By occupation, Thomas was a wheelwright and he was admitted a freeman in 1640. In a notice of him in the Gen. Register, the names of his children are given, and mention is made of his "second wife Sarah." This I apprehend is a mistake; his first wife was prob. Sarah, whom he married before he emigrated, and several of his children were probably born in England, perhaps the first four, as no record of their births are to be found, neither any record of the death of his first wife, or marriage to his second wife Katherine, who d. Nov. 7, 1677. His will is in the Probate Office at Boston.
