Marched to reinforce Northern army after the evacuation of Ticonderoga.

In 1782, after the Rev. War, Stoughton located his family in an area called "The Plains" near Oneonta in what was the Montgomery Co., New York (now Otsego Co., New York). Stoughton Alger and his wife Ruth were some of the first settlers to the area leaving when the Indians there became unfriendly but moving back a few years later (about 1788).

Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, NY:
"Mr Stoughton Alger died december the 23rd, 1822, aged 73 years"
"Mrs Ruth, wife of Mr Stoughton Alger died January 8th, 1816, aged 66 yrs."
(both of these stones are slate and the faces are starting to chip and fall off.)

Also there Stoughton Alger died May 19, 1860 age 77 yrs (this is the Jr.) and Sarah Gates, wife of Stoughton Alger died July 2, 1864 age 78yrs 7 mos.

At Oneonta Plains, on the 19th ult., Stoton (Stoughton) ALGER, in the 78th year of his age. Mr. Alger was born
in Norwich, Connecticut; moved with his parents to this place, when at the age of 6 years, which was then called
Otego. He embraced religion at the age of 35-soon after united with the Free Baptist Church at Oneonta Plains, of
which he has remained a member in good standing until dismissed by death. He leaves a large number of near
and distant relatives to mourn his death. May the lonely widow and the youngest daughter, the only child left at
home, share richly in the sympathies of surrounding relatives and friends.

Peter married Lavinia, daughter of Oliver and Rebecca Smith, by whom he had nine children, viz.: Oliver, who died in Michigan; Rebecca (Mrs. G.W. Flint), of Rodman; David, W. Tyler, and Charles, of Worth; Nancy (Mrs. C.V. Halliday), of Ellisburgh; Susie (Mrs. Jerry Marvin), of Worth; and George, also of Worth. David was born in 1839, and was reared upon a farm. In 1860 he married Betsy K., daughter of Hiram and Deborah (Carpenter) Coon, by whom he had four sons, viz.: William R., born in 1861, resides in Ellisburgh; Melvin V., born in 1864, resides in East Saginaw, Mich.; Frank P., born October 8, 1869, resides with his parents; and Earl J., born in 1883. Mr. Houghtaling is a farmer on road 21, in this town. W. Tyler Houghtaling, born in 1841, married Louisa D., daughter of Hiram and Deborah (Carpenter) Coon, February 13, 1864, by whom he had children as follows: James E., born in 1865; Lillian L., born April 9, 1867; Belle, who died in infancy; Minnie Belle, born June 28, 1872; Ernest B., born March 29, 1875; and William R., born April 30, 1881. W.T. Houghtaling is engaged in farming near Worth Center, on road 21.

Notes:

Christopher stated on his Civil War - Invalid Pension Application, that for 35 years prior to his enlistment in the Army he had resided in Russell, St. Lawrence Co., New York, and that he had resided there since his discharge.
He went on to state that he had farmed, chopped wood, and cleared land prior to enlisting in the Union Army.
Regarding his service in the Army he stated "I was taken with a violent cold while at Fort Independence, (Mass.) which was followed by a severe cough, which brought on a pain in my left side. I was sent to Richmond, Va. in the later part of May, 1865. A short time after my arrival there I was taken with chronic diarrhea. I was treated in the regiment for a while and then sent to the hospital"...
The result of this last illness led to Christopher's discharge.
Christopher suffered with the side pain and other ailments for years after his discharge. However he stated that he found some relief by spending time in the wilderness, living on wild game and fish.

He enlisted March 14, 1865 and was released October 15, 1865, total service 7 months and 2 days.
1890 St. Lawrence County Civil War Veteran Census Transcription Files, Russell, Enumeration District 220. Civil War discharge records show he was released from the Co. D, 2nd Battalion, 17 Regiment. under U.S. Regulars in Richmond, Va. in June 1865, and received back pay for four months and travel pay.
