From the History of Osage County: John Marquand was born on the Isle of Guernsey, which is situated in the English Channel, where he was reared and grew to maturity, and then, in company with his brother Charles and three cousins, immigrated to the United States in 1806.

John Marquand was married to Martha Parker, March 19, 1819. The two brothers located in Coshocton County, Ohio, where John married and spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring in middle life, about the year 1839.

John married PARKER, Martha 18 Mar 1819, Ohio. Martha (daughter of PARKER, Jacob and BELMON, Rhoda) was born 1 Jan 1799, Virginia; died 13 Dec 1847, Coshocton County, Ohio; was buried , Adams Mills. [Group Sheet]

Hazel saw a list of Beal's property at the time of his death, and it was valued at $40,000, which didn't last until Emily's death, because she married a music ian - Benjamin Sebring - who was not a good financier, but the three older boys , John,
Joe, and George managed to get college educations, and became doctors before it was all gone.
The family moved to Illinois where Uncle John's lived ever after. Uncle Joe went to Chamois, MO and the family came there too, and th ere Grandmother died after giving her youngest son Willie Sebring to her brothe r, Henry Marquand and his wife.
When Papa and Mama were married they took the next little boy to live with them. His name was Bennie, and Ruley stayed with U ncle Joe.
Grandma's tombstone is quite unique. Her Wagner sons never forgave h er second marriage, though I think they frew ashamed of that, as they grew olde r and wiser. On the tombstone they put, "To the memory of Emily, erected by her sons John,
Joseph, George and Harvey Wagner." No Sebring name on the stone!
All I heard of grandmother Emily is that she was a wonderful housekeeper and co ok, and the educated men of her day enjoyed talking with her because she was so intelligent and quick-witted, and she received some money from France at one t ime! We
can use our imaginations around all of that quite pleasantly!

Hon. Henry Marquand, prosecuting attorney of Osage County, was born in Coshocto n County, Ohio, in 1837, and is a son of John and Martha (Parker) Marquand. Joh n Marquand was born on the Isle of Guernsey, which is situated in the English C hannel,

life, his death occurring in middle life, about the year 1839. T he mother of our subject was a native of Virginia, and removed with her parents , John and Elizabeth Parker, to Coshocton County, Ohio, where she died in 1847. Henry Marquand
received his education at the common schools and at West Bedfo rd Academy, after which he engaged in teaching and farming for several years. I n 1857 he went to Chamois, Osage County, MO, where he taught six months, and th e following three years
was employed as a clerk in the store of Wheeler & Knot t. In 1861 he returned to his native county and married Jemima, daughter of Lem uel and Jemima (Turner) Richards, natives of Maryland, who removed to West Bedf ord, Ohio, where the mother died
about 1879; the father died in Osage County, MO in 1885. Mrs. Marquand was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1840. Two child ren have blessed this union, Charles R. and Grace E. After his marriages Mr. Ma rquand clerked one year, and then
enlisted in Company F, Ninety-seventh Ohio V olunteer Infantry; he was promoted to corporal and sergeant, and mustered out a t Columbus, Ohio, in June 1865, as quartermaster-sergeant. He participated in t he battles of La Vergne, Murfreesboro,
Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, siege of Kn oxville, Kenesaw Mountain, Resaca, Franklin, Nashville and others. Returning to Ohio at the close of the war, he soon afterward removed to Chamois, Osage Co., MO, and became a member of the mercantile firm
of Marquand & Shobe, afterward Knott & Marquand, and later known as Mason & Marquand, until 1869. He then eng aged in teaching, and in 1870 was elected county school superintendent. In 1872 he was elected to represent Osage County in the State
Legislature, and was th e first Republican ever elected in Osage County to the Legislature, and from 18 75 to 1878 was a member of the firm of Ramsey & Marquand. In 1879 he was admitt ed to the Osage County bar, since which time he has devoted his
principal atte ntion to the practice of the legal profession, and is one of the leading attorn eys of the county. Mr. Marquand was appointed postmaster of Chamois in 1879, in which capacity he served until 1885. Since the organization of the
Chamois Mu tual Saving Fund, Loan and Building Association, in 1882, he has been secretary . He is a Republican in politics, and is a member of the A.F.&A.M. Mr. and Mrs. Marquand have been members of the Methodist Church for over thirty years,
and are well-known and highly respected citizens of Chamois. Mr. Marquand is now s erving his third term as prosecuting attorney of the county, having been first elected to that position in 1884, his second re-election occurring in 1888.

SAVAGE, RUTH ELIZABETH (MARQUAND) RUTH AND KEITH TOGETHER AGAIN Ruth Elizabeth Marquand Savage, born May 24, 1910, passed away peacefully in her home, December 25, 2003. She was 93. Born in Ogallah, Kansas to Mattie and Wesley Marquand. Her husband, Keith, preceded her in death on December 29, 2000 after 70 years of marriage. Ruth and Keith first met at the Holtville Methodist Church. Ruth and her family had comefrom Kansas to spend the winter in Holtville with her brothers. Cupid ' s arrow struck immediately. However, due to Ruth ' s young age (14), Mother Marquand would only allow them to see each other at choir practice. That was when Keith first developed an interest in music. Ruth enrolled in Holtville High School for the school year. At the end of the year, she and her family returned to Kansas. Ruth and Keith wrote to each other and began a courtship that lastedfor the next 6 years. They saw each other only once each year when Keith used his vacation to travel to Kansas. Finally Father and Mother Marquand gave their consent for a marriage which took place in Ogallah on August 6, 1930. The couple began their married life in Holtville where they resided until their deaths. They were blessed with two sons. Ruth, who had attended teachers college in Kansas, became a homemaker. This changed when WorId War II came along and Ruth was asked to teach in the elementary school. She taught for over 20 years, retiring to go traveling with Keith when he retired as president of the Holtville First National Bank. For the rest of her life she was fondly remembered by former students who would greet her warmly wherever she would go in Imperial Valley. Ruth leaves two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and wife Jacqueline of El Cajon, California, and Michael (wife Janice, deceased) of Cathedral City, California. In addition, she leaves fivegrandchildren, David Savage of La Jolla, California, Debbie Schwendinger (Daniel) of El Cajon, California; Michelle Leichtner (Marc) of Yucca Valley, California, twins, Shari Kint (Michael) of Peoria, Arizona, and Stacy Taylor of La Quinta, California. She also leaves fifteen great-grandchildren. Services to be held at the Holtville United Methodist Church, 225 West Seventh Street, Holtville, California, at 1 p.m., January 2, 2004.
