    Notes:

An ancestral heritage of personal independence came to Abraham from his grandmother, Bathsheb Herring, daughter of Leonard Herring, of Virginia, who when told by her father Leonard--perhaps influenced by traditions of the "Royal Pedigree" of the Leonards -- that she might have her choice between giving up her plebeian lover, Abraham Lincoln, Sr., or being disinherited, promptly chose the latter and went with the husband of her choice to the wilds of Kentucky. Doubtless the aristocratic Leonard thought his daughter was making the mistake of her life. Instead, she was stepping up into the real Aristocracy of this glorious land.

Bathsheba married LINCOLN, Abraham 9 Jun 1770, Bridgewater, Agusta-Now Rock County, Virginia. Abraham (son of LINCOLN, John and FLOWERS, Rebecca) was born 16 Jun 1739, Berkshire County, Pa; died May 1786, Jefferson County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet]

    Thomas Lincoln (ca. 1776-1851)

Thomas was born in Virgina, and his family soon brought him west toKentucky. Indians killed h is father, named Abraham Lincoln, while he wasclearing farmland, leaving young Thomas and hi s family fatherless. Hemoved to Hardin County, Kentucky in 1802, and one year later, purchase dhis first farm. Thomas married Nancy Hanks on June 12, 1806. They hadthree children: Sarah ( February 10, 1807), Abraham Lincoln (February 12,1809), and Thomas (1812) who died in infancy .

Historical documents show that Thomas was a responsible citizen andcommunity leader, but he r epeatedly fell victim to Kentucky's chaoticland laws and was constantly frustrated by the pre sence of slavery. In1816, Thomas and his family crossed the Ohio River and purchased a farmdi rectly from the Federal Government in what is today Spencer County,Indiana.

Two years later his wife died due to milk sickness, and Thomas married awidow, Sarah Bush Joh nston.

Although Lincoln developed a close relationship with his stepmother, hisrelationship with hi s father was strained. In 1830, he moved with hisfather for the last time when they travelle d to Illinois. A year later,he set out on his own. His father continued farming in Coles Coun ty,Illinois until his death in 1851. He was buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, near his Illinois f arm.
