According to Earl L. Kelly, 1996:
He was a forest ranger and worked at Forest Hill Ca. near Grass Valley. In his younger years he ran a freight line between Marysville and La Porte, one time My father when about 10 years old rode with him on the freight wagon, It was spring and the high water weakened the Dry Creek bridge out of Marysville, the heavily loaded wagon broke through the bridge killing a number of the draft horses. This was told to me many years ago by my father C.L. Kelly. He also told of his first trip to Oroville Ca., it was springtime and the streets were a quagmire of mud, the sidewalks were wood and the business were general stores, livery stables, and sportin' houses and a few blacksmith's. No utilities as we know them. The date was about 1885. Oroville had a population of 5000 Chinese at one time.

"He's my great grandfather! Actually, he was often called "Percy", his middle name, in addition to signing his name (and stamping all the books and pamplets he owned) "E.P. Gleason". He seemed to be a jack of all trades. Trained as a teacher he worked everywhere between Capay, Yolo County, CA. and Downieville, Sierra County, CA and Camptonville, Yuba County, CA. He and my great grandmother wrote prolific letters to each other before they were married. I have yet to sort through them all but the majority are dated 1899/1900. I *think* they were married 31 Dec 1901, with the "proof" date of 1902. He became a forest ranger for the US Forest Service (new branch) in 1911 according to my grandmother, Jean. His wife Lydia Lee taught at the North Bloomfield (Nevada County) school before moving to Nevada City in 1920. I'm not sure how long they were in North Bloomfield as my grandmother Jean (the baby of the bunch) was born in Challenge, Yuba County, CA in 1914".

"He and Lydia Lee Vineyard had 8 children. Harold, Ralph, Donald, Earl, Ray, Verne, Ruth (b. 8 Dec 1912) and Jean (b. 18 Feb 1914, d. 27 Jun 2005). Ruth is the only one still living".

Notes for "Fiddler" Francis D. Kelly:

Francis (Frank) was shown in the family bible to have married Mary Lee (unknown as to possible relation to Fernando's). This must have happened before 11 Feb 1891. The bible appeared to state that they were divorced on 13 May 1898: "Divorced, wife duly notified". It also APPEARED to state that she died 3 Oct 1896. It is unlikely both are true.

Frank then married Maude A. Adams (she remarried after Frank died to Lewis Hackard and she died 15 Oct 1969
in Redding).

Frank lived his last few years at 2285 Bridge St. Oroville Ca, at his brother's place in the back yard, in a small trailer. He took a pain killers for a kidney condition in his last years. C.L. Kelly, his brother buried him in the cemetery south of Oroville, his nephew had a marker placed on his grave.

He was a pretty good fiddle player and played for dances for years.

Follwing his death, his second wife married Mr. Louis Hackard. Their last known address was Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hackard 1225 West Street Redding Ca. 96001. This was July 24, 1968 and they were 85 years old. Her name was Maude.

By Earl L Kelly son (Circa 1998):

Lived in Oregon House when he was approximately 10 years old. He cared for his grandmother Mary A. (Klinck) Kelly when his parents moved to Marysville. His parents traded off the homestead at Oregon House for a horse and wagon, following the death of Mary, and C.L. Kelly and parents moved to Redding, Shasta Co., Ca. He finished growing up there, got a job as lineman with the Northern Ca. Power Co. After his marriage to Evie they lived in De La Mar and other company towns where his first two sons were born. He also did some professional gambling at that time.

C.L. and wife spent some time cooking on a steamer on the Columbia River during their short marriage. Evie soon became fed up with C.L.K. and left with C.L.K.'s best freind, a man by the name of ? Berrigan. She divorced C.L.K. and married Barrigan.

C.L.K. then got a job with the Northern Electric Railroad in Tres Vias near Oroville, where he met and married Lola Soper who was staying with some friends at Tres Vias. They bought a house at 1922 Pomona Ave. Oroville (It's Still there). They paid $400.00 for it in 1913, and their two children were born there.

After working five years 12 hours a day 6 days a week for the Railroad for $90.00 a month, he went to work for the Oroville Creamery owned by Brerton Family, 1918 C.L. bought a new Model T Ford and took it apart to become an auto Mechanic. He worked on Model T Creamery trucks and started a repair shop at Pamona Ave., in a single car garage.

After about five years there he bought a larger place on 2880 Mitchell Ave. He built a 20' by 30' garage and a 2 bedroom house there. The garage had a pit to get under cars; he also had a gas pump. "I (Earl L Kelly) grew up working on cars at Mitchell Ave." C.L.K. also wrecked many cars there.

C.L.K. did some bootleging for a while, selling booze to some of the town's most honored people. He got caught once in 1932 spent one night in jail and paid a $625.00 Fine. Found guilty by Harry Hills.

He moved to 2285 Bridge St. in 1934 and built a 30' by 40' garage there and continued business there until about 1946. He tapered off from age. He lived there until he died in 1963.

He came to California with his mother in 1879, when 3 years old.

C.L.Kelly had his mother make out a notarized birth certificate in Chico, August 14, 1942, Notarized by Larry Richardson. His fingerprint was taken by G.C. Post deputy Sheriff Butte Co., Ca. Place of birth was Nunda, Illinois, Mc Henry Co.

Notes:

Merl, a native Californian, lived in Chico from 1920 until his death in 1977 at age 83. Census records indicate he was born in 1894 at Oregon House, Yuba Co., CA., where his family had located from Algonquin, Mc Henry Co., Illinois around 1880. He appears in the Marysville area with his older brothers and parents in the 1900 census where his father, Joseph, was a gold miner.

Merl, a WWI soldier, was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army when attending basic training at camp Kearny, Ca., By a written request to the President of the U.S. that Merle was needed at home. After his divorce from Alice, he stayed with his mother until she died in 1944.

The 1920 census has Merl, his mother Alice and uncle Fernando Kelly all living together in Buckeye Township, Shasta Co., CA., (his mother had been widowed by then).

We can follow the movements of Merl from 1921 on through Chico city directories located at the Sutro Library in San Francisco, CA.

1921 finds Merl living with his widowed mother Alice and his uncle Fernando G. Kelly at 4045 7th street, his occupation was listed as laborer, his uncle was a public school teacher.

At the end of 1921 Merl was married to Alice M. Stevens. The Dec. 6, 1921 issue of the Enterprise Record shows: Couple Marry - Alice M. Stevens and Merl G. Kelly, both of Chico were married last night at 8:30 by Justice of the Peace J.L. Barnes in the municipal building.

1922 has Merl working at D. M. (Diamond Match) Co. as a Laborer.
-
Merl and Alice moved to 4821 9th street in Chico in about 1928, and to 4534 9th Street in 1931. About 1930 Merl is listed as a chauffeur.

About 1933 He and Alice had split up, and gone their separate ways.
-
In 1935 Merl and a woman by the surname Methrin had a child together.
-
1937 finds Merl at 244 W. 9th, and at 644 W. 2nd in 1945.
-
Another career change came about for Merl in 1948 when he is listed as a reader at the Christian Science Church, his address is also different at 440 W. 4th.

By November 24, 1950 Merl had married Suzie Newquist.
-
Merl's death certificate indicated he was a self employed man and had been a widower at the time of his death.

Merl's Obituary appears in the Chico Enterprise Record as follows;

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Brusie Funeral Home for Merl G. Kelly, 83, of 1147 Neal Dow Ave.
Kelly died Friday at a local hospital.
Born Aug. 1, 1894 in Marysville to Joseph and Alice Kelly, he lived in Yuba County until the age of six, when the family moved to Redding. He lived there until joining the Army in 1918, and moved to Chico after his military service.
Survivors include three daughters, Alta M. Bassett of Chico; Betty Comasky of Stockton, and Elsie E. Perry of Eagle, Colo.
Bishop Robert Standing will officiate at the services, and Mrs. Joyce Bae will sing "Beyond the Sunset", and "Going Home." Interment will be in the veterans section of the Chico Cemetery with Jimmy McMahon, Everett Cudd, Frank Zucca, Albert Coleman, Tony Squillace and Ernie Cook as casket bearers.
The flag will be presented by members of the Chico Post 17 of the American Legion.

L. F. MILLER

Mr. Miller is a native Californian, born in Forest City, Sierra County, October 9, 1878, the youngest of four children in the family of George and Emily (Knapp) Miller. George Miller was a native of Germany, and entered the German Army at the age of sixteen, serving three years and six months, after which he came to America, direct to Marysville, Cal. He learned the butcher’s trade and followed that business twelve years in Yuba and Sierra Counties. Then, selling out his business at Forest City, he engaged in stock-raising in the Yuba foot-hills. His death occurred on July 4, 1905. Emily (Knapp) Miller came to California from Ohio and taught school at Goodyear Bar prior to her marriage. Three children survive in the family.

L. F. Miller was closely associated with his father in his stock-raising enterprises, and conducted the business for his mother for two years after his father’s death. In 1910 he bought out the Browns Valley Mercantile Company, becoming associated as joint owner with W. R. Hendricks; and after four years he sold out his interests to the latter. The development of land through irrigation was of great interest to Mr. Miller, and for four years he acted as superintendent of the Browns Valley Irrigation District, from 1914 to 1918. Then for four years he was in the employ of the Pacific Gold Dredge Company, on the Yuba River; and now he is with the Yuba Consolidated Goldfield Company at Hammonton.

The marriage of Mr. Miller, which occurred near Browns Valley in 1900, united him with Miss Flora Gleason, born on the Gleason ranch, the daughter of William E. and Phoebe (Cartwright) Gleason, pioneer settlers of Yuba County. Two children came to brighten the Miller household, Clyde and Nadine. During his different activities, Mr. Miller has always maintained his home at Browns Valley, and has taken an active interest in all community affairs, giving liberally of his time and means to improve his district. He is a stockholder in the Browns Valley Improvement Club.

My father divorced in 1950 and married Pauline Marie White (b. 25 Apr 1931 in Bismark, ND d. 23 Jul 1999 in Modesto) on 23 Dec 1950 in Reno.
They had 4 children:

Alta was born at 3:55 AM at the address of 4045 7th. St, in Chico, CA. The attending Physician was Ella P. Gatchell. At the time her parents Merl and Alice had not decided on a name, however her social security record (566-34-8580) confirms the same birthdate as the Butte Co., CA. birth record.
Alta's parents were 28, Merl and 18, Alice. at the time of her birth, and had been married nearly 10 months.

Alta was married to John Briggs in about 1940. The couple had 2 children together and married each other twice before divorcing sometime latter.

Following the divorce Alta was with Freddie McFall for some time, and together they had one daughter Norma Lelonie McFall (her surname may be Kelly, Briggs or McFall, as Alta and Freddie were not married).
By the mid 1970's Alta married Homer K. Bassett. Homer had been married twice before and also had at least seven children by his first wife Thelma before marrying Alta. The couple stayed together until Homer died in 1989. Alta passed away in 1991 in Oregon, and her cremains were interred in Chico, Butte Co., California, next to Homer Bassett. (Josephine Co., Oregon Death Certificate #91-06761).

Elsie or Betty as she was known, was adopted as a small child by the Ewertsen family, and became known as Betty Ann Ewertsen.
She married a man by the name of George Comaskey and lived in Stockton, San Joaquin Co., California.

There is an immigration record for a Carl Ewertsen age 27 who immigrated to Ellis Island in 1903.

Meinert's middle name was Christian, from his WWI draft registration card.
He was described as medium height with a stout build, blue eyes and light brown hair.
His wife was named Lydia Anna Ewertsen.
His family was living at 1207 N. Lincoln St., Stockton, CA.
