Lewis Durett was born in Keeseville, Essex County, New York, February 3, 1834. His father Anthony Durett, was born in Canada, and when a small boy came to reside in the State of New York. His grand-father Anthony Durett, was a native of France. His mother, Margaret (Myres) Durett, was born in the State of New York, of Scotch parents.
When only nine years of age Mr. Lewis Durett was deprived of his mother by death, and he was obliged to come up without many of the early advantages that some boys enjoy. His father died in 1863.
Early in life he was put to work at whatever he could, and learned the business of gilding in a tool factory.
In 1859 he removed to Port Huron, Michigan, and was there for ten years. September 13, 1862, he enlisted in the Union ranks, in Company F, Twent-seventh Michigan Infantry, and was soon sent to the front. In Kentucky he was engaged in several small battles before reaching Vicksburg, which was captured while he was there, on July 4, 1863. They then went to Knoxville, Tennessee, and were in all the battles there until 1864.
At the battle of Knoxville he received a gun-shot wound which caused him to remain in the hospital three months. After returning to his command he was detailed on provost duty, and was there until July, 1864, when he was sent to the quartermaster's department, and served there until July 26, 1865, when he was honorably discharged.
When he returned home he sailed on the lakes four years, - one year before the mast, and afterward as mate and sailing master. During this time he was engaged in the grain, iron ore, and lumber trades.
In 1869 he removed to Nebraska and engaged with his brother in the plastering business, and while there he took a Government homestead and purchased eighty acres besides, making 240 acres of land in York County, Nebraska. Since then he has been engaged in buying and selling stock.
In 1884 he came to San Jacinto, bought a lot and built a store, which he still owns. He also bought twenty acres of land where he now resides, and has built a comfortable home. He also has town lots in different places.
April 10, 1852 he was married to miss Angelina Bolio, born May 10, 1836, in Canada. They had three children: Harriet, born February 19, 1853; Henry, born November 19, 1855, and William, born May 6, 1858. Mrs. Durett died March 22, 1866, and in 1871 he was again married to Miss Sarah A. Gilbert, a native of Troy, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, daughter of William H. Gilbert. She was born June 27, 1852. She is a member of the Christian Church, of the Ladies' Aid Society, and of the W.C.T.U. While in Nebraska she was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary Relief Corps.
When the first G. A. R. started in Nebraska, Mr. Durett joined Anderson Post, No. 32, and is now a member of J.A. Addison Post, No. 121, San Jacinto.
His principal business is the breeding and raising of blooded horses, both trotters and all works. He owns a fine Clyde stock horse; he is also the owner of Pope Leo, a Blackhawk and Hamilton horse that has a record of 2:22, and is from very fast stock. He has also several very valuable brood mares and some very promising growing colts. One of the most very desirable things about a horse is docility and gentleness of temper, and Mr. Durett's horses are remarkably gentle and well trained. He is justly proud of his horses.

    1835 Birth:
Henry is the son of Anthony Durett and Margaret Myres, per a biography written about Henry's brother Lewis in: An Illustrated history of southern California : embracing the counties of San Diego, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange, and the peninsula of lower California, from the earliest period of occupancy to the present time, together with glimpses of their prospects, also, full-page portraits of some of their eminent men, and biographical mention of many of their pioneers and of prominent citizens of to-day.
    Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co., 1890, 934 pgs. (p. 153-154).

The following was a letter written by Henry to the pension board. In it he explains to the best of his memory, his birth record and family origins:

    Soldier's Home 2/16/1910
    To the Commissioner of Pensions

    Dear Sir,

Your letter of ____ is at hand now in regard to family record.
All I can say is this, in regard to record I have none as my father was not an educated man, had no records of family.
The only record ever was I had a testament when I was a boy, but one of my uncles stole it, and I never got back.
When my mother died the family went to live with our grandfather to live.
Now my birth place was what was called the Lower Falls on the Big Sable River, about 3 or 4 miles from Keyesville ____ Clinton Co., NY state, was brought up in other places; Keyesville, Plattsburgh, left Plattsburgh and went to Canton, St. Lawrence Co., NY. From There went west.
Now my mother died when I was very young. All I know of my parents births:
Father was born in Para de Shin (likely "Prairie Du Chien"), Canada as near as I can remember.
Mother was born in Keyesville or Plattsburgh, NY.
The last time I saw my father alive, those are the last words I ever had with him in regard to births. He told me I was born in 1835.
There is none of our family living, only me and my brother who lives in San Jacinto, Riverside Co., Cal.
Our family was all baptised in the Catholic religion. I don't know of any record of it, all I know is my God Parents were Moses LaPorte and wife of S_____.

    Notes:

In 1880 the Ogden, Weber Co., Utah census shows Harry with the family of Duane Hillshaw, a lawyer, as a 13 year old servant. He was not recorded with his parents. It is unknown why this arrangement took place.
    -
Harry seems to have caught a case of "gold fever" during the Klondike gold strike of 1897.
Harry (shown as Henry) appears in the 1900 Skagway, Alaska census living with his wife Frankie. The census shows Harry as Henry, however the birth date / state and parent's birth states seem to confirm the assumption that this is our Harry or else he was a twin. The census states that Harry was a miner who previously had lived in Seattle, Washington and had been a construction worker. Frankie is shown as having been born in California and her parents were both born in New England, her bithdate is shown as January, 1859, making her 7 years Harry's senior.
    -
More confirmation of this Harry (Henry) are the 1891, 1893 directory listings, found by Joan R. Fitch, showing a Henry Durett plasterer is shown in the Tacoma City Directory (Puyallup Co., Washington).

    Notes:

    SOURCE:
The following infromation was compiled from numerous sources, and much of the credit goes to Joan R. Fitch (Gertrude's grand daughter).

Gertrude appears in the 1880 census as a 4 year old child attending school. She was living at home with her 2 older sisters and her parents. The census shows that she was born in Nebraska and her sisters were born in Michigan.
    -
By 1890 Gertrude was in California as she was recorded as being married to Sylvester S. Ackley on March 3, 1890 in Emmett, San Benito Co., California. witnessed by G. W. Call. Both bride and groom were said to be from Emmett. Sylvester was shown as age 35 and Gertrude was shown as age 17 or 18. In March of 1890 her actual age was almost 14.
    -
In the 1900 census taken at Corning, Tehama Co., California Gertrude stated she was born in Utah (actually Nebraska) and she had two children from a previous marriage to Mr. Ackley, they were Agnes age 6 and Charles age 4. In the same census she was newly married to Henry Stevens with a new baby girl, yet to be named, age 4 months. She went on to state that she had given birth to 4 children however 3 were still living in 1900. At the time of the 1900 census Gertrude's ex-husband Samuel Sylvester Ackley was living in Squaw Valley Township, Siskiyou Co., California with his sister Bertha and various other children of his, from another marriage.
    -
By May 1904 Gertrude was married to Harvey Thomas Halsey and was living in Red Bluff, Tehama Co. Ca. there were at least 4 children Gertrude brought to the marriage and 4 other children they had together.
    -
The 1910 census of Tehama Co., California finds the family in Red Bluff, at 541 Breckenridge Drive, as follows:
Halsey, Harvey, head, male, white, 35, married 6 yrs., b. CA, fa. b. MO, mo. b. Iowa , laborer, odd jobs
", Gertrude, wife, female, white, 34, married 6 yrs., 3 children all surviving, b. UT, fa. b. France, mo. b. US
", Alice, daughter, female, white, 5, single, b. CA, fa. b. CA, mo. b. UT
", Marion, son, male, white, 3, single, b. CA, fa. b. CA, mo. b. UT
", James M., son, male, white, 1, single, b. CA, fa. b. CA, mo. b. UT
    -
With all the strain on her marriage, and Harvey being gone much of the time, Gertrude found herself unable to adequately care for the children, and the County took them to be adopted. Gertrude later came to get Harry (the youngest), and Alice ran away from the orphanage to be with her mother again. The other children are believed to have been adopted by other families. Marion was raised by the Latimers.
    -
Gertrude sued for divorce on September 5, 1919. (Butte Co., California : Suit #807R).
    -
The 1920 census finds Gertrude Halsey living in Chico, Butte Co., California with her daughter Alice and son Harry. The address was 4701 9th. Street. The census shows her occupation as building janitor and Alice was working at a match factory (likely Diamond Match of Chico). Gertrude E. was 43, Alice M. 15 and Harry D. 7. Gertrude indicates she was a widow, however she wasn't, she was divorced from Harvey. Harvey lived until the year 1930. ( Butte Co., ED. 10, SH. 14 A, Dated January 15, 1920 ).
    -
The 1930 census shows Gertrude and her family living in Chico Township, Central Portion, Butte Co., California (ED. 12, Sht. 10B).
The census taker had very poor penmanship and Gertrude's name is illegible. Best guess is Rice Stella?. She went on to state she was 53 years old, born in Utah and did not know in which state her parents were born. She was renting her home at $10 per month and had no occupation. Gertrude's daughter was divorced from Merl Kelly by 1930 and appears with Gertrude as Alice (Bruce?) age 26, widowed. Alice had a job as a canner at the local nut company. Alice's son Harold Kelly, age 3 1/2, was with the family as was Harry Durett, age 18, Gertrude's youngest child.
    -
Sometime after the 1930 census Gertrude married a man by the name of John D. Rice in Chico Butte Co., Ca.
    -
Some recollections of Gertrude is that she had dark hair, was compactly built, and she would roll her own cigarettes.
    -
Gertrude's Obituary, March 29, 1937, Chico Enterprise Record:

Most of the following infromation was compiled by Joan R. Fitch

Alice was born just before her mother married Harvey T. Holsey in Red Bluff, Tehama Co., California. Her father is noted as Henry Stevens on her death certificate.
As a child, Alice was raised in the Halsey home and appears there with her mother on the 1910 census. Sometime between 1910 and 1921 Alice and most of her siblings were taken into the care of the county and set for adoption, as their father had abandoned the family, and Gertrude found herself unable to care for so many children.
Alice soon ran away from the orphanage, and back to her mother, who by then, had taken back the youngest of the children, Harry.
Alice married Merl Kelly at a young age, and had 2 daughters and a son with him.
Before 1933 the marriage disolved, and she moved out with her children. Finding herself alone with 3 children was difficult and she had to make the painfull decision to have her second daughter adopted, after consulting her mother Gertrude.
Merl wasn't aware at first about the decision, but found out later.
    -
That daughter "Betty" grew up with adoptive parents and she only found out about Alice when she became an adult.
Alice soon met and married a man by the name of Sam "Stacey" Bailey, and they appear together in the 1933 Chico city directory at 4027 4th Ave. Sam Bailey is supposed to have owned a plumbing business.
By 1934 they had moved to 3925 5th Ave. In 1941 they are shown at Oaklawn Ave. and in 1960-1961 they are listed at 1314 Mulberry.
Alice and Sam split sometime before she moved to Sacramento. Sam stayed in Chico. Alice found work in Sacramento with the Goodwill organization.
