On the 18th November 1840 at Richmond, Derastus was enlisted by Capt. Lowd, into Company A of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, which was based at Buffalo Barracks. He was discharged on the 19th of June 1841, the cause of his discharge was listed as Civil Authorities.

Derascus Escott (Esget) appears on 1850 census as a farmer living in Carlton, Orleans Co., New York. He is shown with wife Roxanna daughter Jane and Mother Mary Escott (Esget).

A D. W. Esgate is said to have settled in Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., Iowa in the year 1850.

Derastus W. Esget (Erget) appears in Linn Co., Iowa in the 1860, living in Fayette Township (p. 331). His brother Isaac died in Linn county in 1863.
