This John was a prisoner in San Rafael, Marin Co., California.
He was employed at te prison as a spinner in a jute mill.
He stated he and his parents were born in Ohio.
He also stated he had been married 6 years, which is close to the information John provided on the 1930 census.

He stated he was a (tasker?) at the Stanford Vina Ranch in Tehama Co., California.
His nearest relative was Ernest Rice, his brother of (San____), Orange Co., California.
John's physical description was height short, build medium, brown hair and eyes.
John's twin Delmer registered in Red River Co., Texas and indicated his wife's name as Gertrude. (the same first name as the woman John would later marry).

The 1920 census for Vina, Tehama Co., California shows a Johnnie Rice, 37, single, b. Ohio.

The 1930 census for Dayton, Butte Co., California (ED. 16, Sh. 4B) shows John D. Rice, age 53. John Stated he was a sheep herder, working on a sheep ranch. He stated he had been married at one point at the age of 23. He also indicated he was born in Ohio and his parents were born in Indiana. He was renting a house at $1 per month.

Death Summons John D. Rice.
John D. Rice, resident of this community for the past 33 years, passed away last evening at a local hospital following a prolonged illness.
Rice was 63 years of age and a native of Ohio and had been employed on the E. L. Adams ranch at Durham for the past 12 years. Fraternally he was associated with the Chico Ae_e of Eagles. Surviving him are a brother Ernest Rice of Santa Anna, and two step children, Mrs. S. A. Bailey and Harry Durette, both of Chico.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Black & Johnson funeral home.
