Notes
Notes for Lola Carol Soper:
By Earl L. Kelly son of Lola (Date Dec. 1. 1995):
"My mother was born in Platte County, Missouri 7 30 1894. Her parents lived below the Mason Dixon Line, where the family had a plantation and slaves before the Civil War. The fortunes of war went against them, and the carpet baggers got the farm and left them with hardly anything".
C.C, Soper, Mary Soper, and family moved to Montana about 1898; they did poorly in Montana and not having money for railroad transportation, they moved to California by Covered wagon, taking what belonging's they could.
They first stayed in Ripon, San Joaquin Co., Ca., then moved to Robert's Island in Stockton. They were there during the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906. Sometime later they homesteaded 40 acres in Bald Rock.
They suffered hard times as the land wasn't very productive. They raised a few apples, blackberries, and had a cow for milk. They would pick blackberries in season and take them 25 miles by wagon at night so they would be fresh for market, and trade them off for supplies needed. (Earl L. Kelly speaking) "My mother went to Bald Rock School through the seventh grade. Her father ran away with some Indians and her mother died about 1912 she met my father and married him in 1913."
